Is the iPhone 3GS worth the upgrade? Well, that depends. Now, that I’ve had a little time to play with it I can confidently say that the new iPhone is a nice upgrade but ultimately not an essential one for most. For users that have been using the iPhone as a gaming platform mainly or coveting the ability to take video with their cell phone, the iPhone 3GS may be worth the upgrade price. Bumps in both processor and RAM allow the 3GS to load comparatively faster and display better frame rates than its predecessors. It is most noticeable while playing games with more graphical output. Other perks include a touch-focus camera and the ability to edit video on the fly, albeit through destructive editing which deletes the unused portions. Perhaps, the most useful addition is the Compass app, which not only shows you what direction you are heading, but actually changes the orientation of your pin-pointed location in Google Maps to the direction youre facing. Voice control is also a nice addition although its kind of hit and miss with entries that sound similar to each other.

While all of these features are fine and dandy, most will not be able to justify the upgrade. This is especially true for previous iPhone adopters that are stuck in contracts with higher upgrade fees. If you’re new to the iPhone and looking for these particular features, you may want to go ahead and grab the 3GS for $199. However, most will find they can make do with the older 3G model and updated 3.0 firmware for the cheaper $99 price point. This update includes: Spotlight (Apples search function), Copy/Paste and a built in Voice Recorder for memos and dictation. Let me know what you think in the comments below.
