Rage and Doom 4 Multi-Disc

id Software has been developing Rage and Doom 4 for quite sometime.  As many of you know recently, the developer lost its publisher and was looking for someone else to help them in development of future titles, such as EA publishing Rage. The developer is now acquired by ZeniMax Media of course and will be working on feature titles with them and most likely will have Bethesda publish them.

An interesting bit of information via GameInformer was revealed when it comes to the versions of Rage and Doom 4 though, the games will be multi-disc on the DVD, or it’s looking that way at the moment.  This means that the PC and the Xbox 360 versions will have multiple discs for you to switch to continue play of each game.

Since both games use the id Tech 5 Engine, there is definitely a challenge in fitting both games onto one disc.  “We would love to set the thing up where it filled one Blu-ray disc versus three DVD’s, which is about the right mix, but the game is just…we cant cut it into a third like that,” Carmack says. “We can put it into two pieces.  We’ve got two large wastelands on there.  We just couldn’t make an arbitrary cut.  But Doom 4 is being set up so that it’s almost certainly going to be cut up to three DVDs versus one Blu-ray.  At least they’re got the ability because of the way it’s structured.”

Now that we know that the games will most likely be multi-disc, does this make it less appealing to gamers when purchasing for which system they’d like the game?  I personally find it hard to believe that they cannot take it to one disc on both systems.  A shooter game usually does not match the depth to a RPG game, but I guess being open world with one of the best gaming engines technically requires a lot more space.  As of now it’s still early to say whether or not the games will be multi-disc even though the developer has said that it sure will.  I just don’t see how a developer is willing to allow their games being that large not to fit on one disc.

If multi-disc games are coming to the 360 then maybe, besides Metal Gear Rising, the 360 might see MGS 4 after all.

We all love Final Fantasy VII and that was multi-disc. This shouldn’t be a big deal for Doom 4 as long as the game is made with mutli-disc in mind, as Carmack quite rightly said. Rage, unfortunately, has not been made in that way and was rather a way around a development hiccup. It’s gonna be a struggle…

If Fallout, GTA, Saints, Row, Fable, and Oblivion are single disc and they have alot more going on the most FPS games, I also find it hard to believe they cant fit it on one disc, sounds like they dont know how to compress stuff.

And if you think that FF13 isn’t going to be multi-disc for 360, you’d be insane. Multi-disc is the only way 360 is going to be able to handle these huge titles. I’m perfectly fine with that, as anyone can tell you how many multi-disc PS1 games there were. People won’t have a problem with it.
