Rockstar: GTA Movie Won’t Work

Rockstar’s VP of Creative Dan Houser doesn’t believe a GTA movie would work due to the creative limitations of the film industry.

Houser, speaking to the LA Times, said:

“We don’t believe that the Grand Theft Auto games, which are massive in scope and structurally complex, can be adequately compressed into a two-hour movie.”

Houser then claimed that Rockstar weren’t about to ruin their hard-earned reputation for quality and integrity:

“It seems obvious to us that maintaining the long-term integrity of any entertainment property has been dependent on not making substandard spin-off products to people whose primary interest is making a quick buck.”

This would explain Rockstar’s “cold feet” in the past. Houser, however, did not fully rule-out a GTA movie:

“If we ever decide to do a film, it will be because we have resolved our creative doubts, and while retaining enough control to ensure that if the movie is terrible, at least we will know we ruined the property ourselves.”

Too late, Ron Howard already did that over 30 years ago.

they should fucking brink back those rampage’s(kill frenzies) they had in gta 2, 3 vice city and so forth. I want to be rewarded for mass murder and driving like a lunatic not fucking just completing missions and getting a bit of cash

Fuck that – do a series like Prison Break but a million times more hardcore. The humour is the most important part, along with the drive-by’s, drug dealing and murdering prossies.

Eminem as the main guy, Sammy L, Keitel, Snoop and Jim Carrey as the lovable sidekick Elroy. Add a cliffhanger every week (Eminem has some guys balls in a vice, Snoop chases a drive-by car down with a Tommy gun wearing his hair in bunches, Keitel rapes somebody) and sell that advertising space. As the series reaches it’s inevitable viewer rating downturn, kill Eminem and replace him with Fred Savage.

GTA IV was by far the best GTA so far. I don’t know why they are waiting so long to release good add-on content for it.

GTA IV is/was the he!! of a good game… I think that if they want to make a movie… THEY SHOULD MAKE IT LONGER THAN 2 HOURS… GTA would not be fun if it wasn’t as long as it is.. so why not the movie!

Seeing as GTA ripped off most classic gangster or mob films you could say that GTA is a film in itself. Besides most gangster films nowadays are similar to GTA anyway.

A GTA film will be pathetic. The franchise as a video game has done well, let’s not ruin it.

Well GTAIV definitely wouldn’t work as a film: boring characters that you don’t care about; Repetitive storylines / missions that are essentially meaningless; Nothing effectively set up or paid off at the end. Take the only good bit of the game – the bank heist in the middle – and watch ‘Heat’. Job done.

I agree, I love gta my son loves it my bro commited it so i mean wtf. A movie would be pretty meaningless. But in gta 4 there were messages saying that cj,claude, vic, tony and tommy died. I cried.

Yeah the Easter Egg…but that’s their way of starting new. I guess they’re not dead dead, just that we won’t see them again in GTA. Tommy was my favourite.
