Pong creator Nolan Bushnell has revealed his new game Battleswarm: Field of Honor.
Bushnell, who designed the title, revealed all in this interview. It’s a free-to-play online RTS/shooter game which is “a mash-up between StarCraft and Starship Troopers”. Players can switch between an FPS and RTS style of play.
The FPS side will involve you playing as “a human soldier out to destroy alien bugs” while the RTS mode allows you to “control your bugs, [with tactics] such as swarming, [and] move them around on the terrain, to take on the humans.”
The game will be playable with up to six players on each side and will make use of game developer Reality Gap’s microtransaction currency, MetaTIX.

Bushnell was keen to stress that you could just spend “a nickel, dime or quarter” on content. Bushnell also confirmed that there “will be some segregation”, but also stressed “a really good player doesn’t need to buy extra resources.”
It’s due in September 2009 according to this press release.
And why did Bushnell make a game like this?
“Battleswarm is really about me being able to play against my sons…the problem is, as you get older, you lose some reaction time, and as a result, I’m getting slaughtered by them. A real-time strategy game, however, is more my [preference]”
If you lose, Nolan, just remind them who the daddy is at Pong.
