A Gamespot user has performed some clever research into the PS3 Slim and has found evidence to suggest the concept, as we at least know it, is a fake.
kazuya_m over at the Gamespot boards has been in contact with a group of Chinese people who have been behind some of the fake PS3 Slim pictures. The “brains” of the team work at a factory and used tools their to make the fake PS3 Slim models, while the rest of the team spread the rumours through various internet aliases.
And the reason behind this? They wanted to sell the fake PS3 Slim models on eBay. But apparently the second rumour they revealed wasn’t as believable as the first, and they have decided to reveal their scheme.
It’s an interesting read and explains why all we have been hearing of the PS3 Slim is rumour. The PS3 Slim was always a long way off, but these fakes probably inspired the real thing. Hats off to you kazuya_m!
Oh, and this letter below was apparently sent from lawyers in Taiwan to the major gaming sites when they reported on the PS3 Slim:

If the ps3 slim was fake why would they make ppl take down photos from their website. Also remember that before e3 2 pics came out showing the psp go and the ps3 slim in a box or something. The psp go came out to be true and exactly match the picture that was leaked so this just brings the idea that the ps3 slim is real
If you’re willing to believe that this guy faked the Slim shots then you must also be willing to believe that he faked faking the Slim. The truth is out there, but we don’t have proof yet. All we have is rumors, and people looking to take credit for something by claiming that they are sneaky enough to lie about it. Circular logic at its finest. As always, I believe nothing until evidence shows up. I have to admit though, I would like a slim model. It has nothing to do with my 60gb from launch, I’m still very happy with it. It has everything to do with the lonely PS3less tv in the other room at my house.

Even if it is fake it is probably better than what Sony themselves come up with. Remember when the slimline PS2 was released? It overheated because Sony took the fan out to make it slimmer, what a great idea!

The slim is not fake, sony has always released a slim version of the play station, so why not for the ps3?
It will be the hottest machine on the market because it is “slim” and the will drop the price with like 50£ or more. They´ll make a profit of that.
