Everyone has a favorite game that they loved last gen but the sequels have not yet come to the current generation or aren’t even in development yet. I have searched high and low to find people’s most beloved franchises that haven’t gone “next gen”, and have compiled this list to show the top ten games/franchises that people want to come to the next generation.
To make it onto this list it must fall under this criteria:
- A game for the series has not yet been made for the Wii, Xbox 360, or the PlayStation 3 (ports from last gen don’t count).
- Fans have been asking for a sequel for quite some time.
- There aren’t any official announcements of a game of the series being made.
10 – Syphon Filter
Fans of the series have been asking for a proper sequel since Syphon Filter: The Omega Strain (released back in 2004). Since 2004, every Syphon Filter game has been a PSP game or a rehash of the PSP game ported to the PS2. Fans have been asking Sony for the next installment, of Syphon Filter, to come to the PS3. Rumors suggest that Syphon Filter 5 is in development at the moment but nothing confirmed. Fans may soon find out if the game is in development in the next few months as rumors have suggested that the game will be revealed at this years Tokyo Game Show.
9 – Star Fox
Do any of you remember going over to your uncles house just to play Star Fox 64 only to find out that your 4 year old cousin broke the console by putting peanut butter in the console? What…. no one? Okay that might be just me but I remember going to my uncles house just to play Star Fox 64. It was one of the best games on the console, and that’s no exaggeration. However, Nintendo has failed to deliver a proper Star Fox game for the Wii. Fans have been pleading for Nintendo to make another Star Fox game, but their voices might be falling on deaf ears. Either way this game is one of the most requested games asked to be made for the Wii.
8 – The Getaway
Its been a while since The Getaway and The Getaway 2 came out. Sony announced the sequel, The Getaway 3, for the PS3, but has since been cut for “other projects”. I’m always seeing in forums people begging for the next Getaway game. That is why this game is on the list, because it is so damn requested. Sony has the ball rolling now, maybe they’ll start bringing back old franchises soon. Like our next game….
7 – Twisted Metal
Oh the many nightmares I had after playing against Sweet Tooth in Twisted Metal: Small Brawl. The Twisted Metal series is one of PlayStation’s best combat car series ever. I remember staying up all night long just to play Twisted Metal. Twisted Metal made its mark on the PS1 and PS2, but has yet made a single scratch onto the PS3. Rumor has it that the series creator, David Jaffe, and his studio are creating Twisted Metal for the PS3. Whatever the case we hope to see another Twisted Metal game come to a PS3 near you.
6 – Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
BioWare, the creators of such hits like Mass Effect had a popular game on the original Xbox called, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. After the last game (released back in 2004) fans have been asking BioWare for a third KOTOR. Many still believe that BioWare is creating the third installment. We at KokuGamer.com hope so too, but no one has heard anything for 6 years. That doesn’t mean fans aren’t still begging for it. Its still one of the most wanted sequels from a last gen series. Sure, Star Wars: The Old Republic is on its way in the form of an MMO, but it just isn’t the same (doesn’t mean it won’t rock our socks).
5 – Sly Cooper
Sly Cooper was a very popular game. Made by the masterminds at Sucker Punch Productions ( who also made inFamous ), Sly was a game about a thief, who was a raccoon……. nuff said. Sly was one of the more popular PS2 games that have failed to come to the next generation of consoles. When Sucker Punch announced that they were working on inFamous, fans asked where Sly was. Again rumor has it that Sucker Punch is now working on Sly 4. We hope their working on it too as many fans want to find out what that rat….. er raccoon is up to now.
4 – Psychonauts
Love him or hate him, Tim Schafer knows how to make video games. His new game, Brutal Legend, is coming out in October and it has a ton of hype behind it. That’s because he made games like Psychonauts. One of the most underrated games of last generation, Psychonauts was fan-freakin-tastic with the humor and fun game play mechanics that Tim Schafer’s games are known for. The game received high review scores and overall positive reviews. Sadly the game only sold 400,00 a was deemed a failure at retail. That didn’t get Tim or the fans down, while Tim Schafer is finishing up Brutal Legend, fans still ask for another Psychonauts, but with the sales of the game so low I’m not sure any company would publish a sequel. It is however one of the most requested games fans want remade/another game to.
3 – Kid Icarus
Don’t ask why. For some reason Kid Icarus is a very highly requested game for Wii owners. Owners of the Wii have been asking for a sequel since the console released. Which is why it is so high on our list. But seriously, Kid Icarus was a tough game that gave me hell when I played it on the NES with its abstract level design, it made my 5 year old brain hurt when I played it. Anyways the only reason why it is on the list is because its so highly requested amongst Wii owners, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for a sequel.
2 – Jak & Daxter
Jak & Daxter. Nuff said. Okay I have a little more to say. Why haven’t Naughty Dog made Jak & Daxter for the PS3 yet! I mean i know they are hard at work on Uncharted 2 but I mean come on. They need to bring their game to the next generation. Jak & Daxter is still to this day one of PlayStation fans most wanted game to bring over to the next generation.
1 – Kingdom Hearts
Say what you want about this RPG, Kingdom Hearts is one of the best, if not the best RPG out there. Fans of the series since 2006 have been asking for Kingdom Hearts 3 to no avail. Tetsuya Nomura recently stated that he has some ideas about the third game. I just hope we see it this gen, hopefully by 2012, but knowing Square Enix it wont be out for a long time. Still fans are patiently waiting for the next game for the Kingdom Hearts series. Hopefully Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep will tie people over till Kingdom Hearts 3 is announced.
Any other game series that haven’t gone next gen? Discuss them in our thread that we have set up for you. But if you feel like a lazy monkey today you can always comment in our comment section. No signing up required.
Also if you’re digging this article, make sure you hit the digg button at the bottom of the article, it may just be that the developers are looking at how many diggs it gets to make a possible sequel. :$

Explaining Starcraft to FarmVille People
The Cake is a Lie!
Pfft, KH 3 is coming eventually and in the meantime it’s getting 3 spin-offs! What about Eternal Darkness, Skies of Arcadia, Chrono Trigger?
@ Dave S.
This was a list comprised of the series/games that is most requested on forums and websites. Eternal Darkness and Skys of Arcadia were never mentioned while I was searching. Chrono Trigger however came up once or twice, but didnt come up as often as these other games/series.
Shenmue 3.
End of discussion.

Legend of Dragoon
/article
Bioware is making a sequel to Knights of the Old Republic… its the MMO “The Old Republic” for PC.
I agree! With most but but a jak a sly game would be one i cant wait for as well as another gta game.
Selits is right. Bioware has said that “Star Wars: The Old Republic” Is basically Knights of the Old Republic 3-9
I’m pretty sure that Jet Grind Radio should have been on this list, and it’s lack of inclusion completely discredits this entire article.
J Out.
Viewtiful Joe. Yeah.
I would also like to see sequels for:
Phantom Dust
Shadow Hearts
Legend of Dragoon
Guilty Gear (A proper sequel, not that Overture bullshit)
Bully
Hitman
Capcom vs. SNK
Marvel vs Capcom
Arcana Heart
Powerstone
Oddworld
Okami
Dark Cloud
Suikoden
Legacy of Kain!!!
yes!!! the legacy of kain story isn’t over yet!!! what happens to kain after ‘defiance’? give me more!
“Next Gen” Jet Set Radio please! = a happy brother
Everyone needs to go green and save our planet!
PEACE!
a properly done Crash Bandicoot
“Killer Instict 3″ anyone?
Yeh SW:TOR is KOTOR 3-9 thats what bioware said so pls make sure you actually read the date on the posts. And Skies of Arcadia squeal would be AWESOME!!
No SHENMUE? Remember back when it was supposed to be a 16 part series?
Well, I guess your search didn’t really go that well, did it?
People already mentioned TOR which is supposed to be a sequel to KOTOR. Try digging harder next time.
Also: Most people are looking for the proper sequels to games like Syndicate, Descent Freespace, Freelancer, BG&E, Shenmue, Crimson Skies, Oddworld, X-Com, Warcraft, Carmageddon, Tribes, Sacrifice, Power Stone and other – all come way before some of the weird choices you made here (the Getaway!? Are you serious!?!?).
You should really expand your horizons beyond the few vocal PS2/N64 owner threads you use for your research
@GUY
OH NOES, we didnt pick the games you are after! How dare we allow us to go commit suicide for the shame upseting you has brought upon our families.
Seriously dude you are never happy, ever! We all know that if Freelance, Tribes, X-com, Carmageddon got the next gen treatment they would be bastardised to hell and make us shead a tear for what once was. Oddworld shot itself in the foot with Strangers Wrath (which intrestingly is not part of the 5 game plan they had), and power stone 3 ended up on the psp and was a good but flawed attempt at the classic we love. Shenmue is never going to happen and it breaks my heart but we know it and there is no point of including it.
You should expand your horizons beyond the few vocal retro whores that think they are trendy for your comments.
I have to agree somewhat with Guy. Some of the choices in the list really puzzle me. Yes, Star Fox and Psychonauts FTW, but “The Getaway” and “Kingdom Hearts?” I find it hard to believe that those are the MOST wanted sequels. I’d call into question the accuracy of the selection of the population from which these opinions were drawn in terms of representing the whole.
Chrono Trigger! (Chrono Cross doesnt count!)
This list leaves a little to be desired. I have a hard time believing you searched forums for much more than keywords to put it together. The fact that you don’t know about KOTOR: The Old Republic when a simple internet search for KOTOR 3 would have given you a load of hits is pretty shoddy reporting as well.
Battletoads… nuff said
Yeah, apparently you are listing the sequel-less games that you found first or something? Shenmue. Have you ever heard of Shenmue? The first game, you get on a boat, credits roll. I was maybe 15 at the time, and I literally frothed at the mouth. Shenmue2 came out, I couldn’t get ahold of it. Then I heard it was going to the Xbox – yay! But no. They PORTED it to xbox. FINISH THE GODDAMN STORY! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE??
Also, Psychonauts is seconded. Though it wasn’t all that its cracked up to be, it still deserves more work and polish – one of the most fun games I’ve ever played, just like Portal. Speaking of which…portal 2?? HMM? You are not even a gamer, methinks.
Also, I think we can all say Kingdom Hearts is guaranteed to come out again sooner or later…but now with today’s news, I think I would prefer it to be later. Disney buys Marvel, Square makes Disney characters in their games, we get Wolverine vs Sephiroth. BOOSH. (Though not to be picky, also, Kingdom Hearts isn’t an rpg, its action platforming…you can call it an RPG if you’re the kind of pussy that gets drunk on chocolate milk)
Tekken!
SHENMUE hands down…im still waiting for part III
No more spiritual successors, just give us Dark Cloud 3.
The Getaway? Okay. I’ll take your word for it. I would love to see a next-gen version of Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance. Love the dungeon crawlers. Sacred 2 is okay but a BG3 would be a sweet little announcement.
I don’t know if anyone else feels this way, but I’m always disappointed to see the forgotten-by-most classic “Freedom Fighers” left off of these lists. That game is still incredible, and so prescient in a post-9/11 world. It does what few games are willing to do, which is to let the player assume the role of a terrorist and still be the good guy. Gameplay was amazing, so was the music, and I actually cared about what I was doing.
That was all the way back in Sept/Oct. 2003. It’s time for a sequel.
STAR WARS BATTLEFRONT 3 ><
SSX
Come on my friends, are you forgetting about Parapa the Rapper.
Killer Instinct sequel needs to be made.
Shadow of the Colossus
I’m pretty sure I’m in the minority here
But Outlaws from Lucas Arts is, to me, the best first person western game ever made. I’d LOVE a sequel!!
SSX! I have been waiting forever for this!
vagrant story – not likely but would be great
shadow of the colossus
a GOOD update to front mission
Full Throttle
X wing series
parappa or cool cool tune
and how could you forget bass fishing and daikatana
@ Evan
Bass Fishing lol, I’m sure you’re one of the hundreds not thousands that would like that.
Kingdom Hearts the best RPG of all time!? Don’t get me wrong, it was a great game, but so was the original Lion King. I don’t go around saying the Lion King was the best platformer of all time.
Chrono Trigger, motherfucking clown shoes.
Bully!!!
Also I would love to see a sequel to San andreas or a port of it with gta IV grafix
what abou Double dragon?
Torment, Acanium, Mechwarrior before MSoft took it over, Shadow Run ( not that crap FPS that came out ), and Caveman Games!!
I think many of the people complaining about their favorite game or saying that TOR is KotOR 3 are missing the point.
Saying TOR is KotOR 3 is like saying that WoW is WC3. It might be the same world, but it’s not the same type of game or gameplay, it’s a different way of telling a story.
As for many of the great games mentioned in comments but not in the article, the internet is a huge place, as far as you know they did *more* research than you and found more people/comments for the games mentioned because they didn’t stay in the same corners of the internet that you frequent. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t other classics or great games that need a sequel, just that here’s a list which hopefully you’ll agree with at least one or two of.
As for me, I hope to see a sequal to Planescape: Torment, which I think has one of the best story tellings of games. A new Grim Fandango would also be great. I also agree that many of the listings in the article also need a sequel –and not a ‘here’s a new game let’s slap on the name/make it in the same world as the previous’ but a true sequel of similar (hopefully enhanced/tooled) gameplay, and the characters or story we all hope to see more of.
P.S.
@ Eyowa: a CT sequal sadly probably won’t be seen, it was pre-Squaresoft breakup iirc.
@ R H: Trico hopefully will indeed be awesome.
@ people who say “look at this you didn’t do research”: realize that this is most wanted, which can include things being made already/announced.
I would love another KOTOR, although I don’t know what it would be about
Vagrant story
Hogs of War.
Project Eden.
Baldurs gate, loved that series, true rpg.
Planescape torment would be awesome too, and as fallout already has Arcanum should too. And Fable 2 should come to PC dammit.
If Sony made another Getaway game watch the sales rise in Enlgand and jump through through the roof. I really would go out and buy a ps3 tomorrow if they confirmed this was coming out The getaway3 would be awsome if not another GTA:London or Vice city
No Legacy of Kain / Soulreaver??
Ogre Battle
article on half life episode 3!!!!!!!
yay
http://digg.com/d312tlj
I want a 360 sequel to Crimson Skies and Timesplitters.
Black 2, please. one of the finest console FPS of last generation. and maybe some new Jet Moto?
who else wants to see another power stone???
becuz i know i do.
Beyond Good & evil 2 get it off indefinite hold
What about road rash we need a next gen of that game.
What about FF7 and Chrono trigger? the 2 most requested remakes/sequals in the history of video games… also the legend of dragoon which people have been begging for a remake of since the ps2 came out.
p.s Im fairly certain david jaffe confirmed like a month after he opened his new studio that they were working on a new twisted metal game for the ps3.
i know it wasn’t very well known. but i think that a kinetica sequel could’ve had SO much awesome potential. unfortunately the odds of this happening are basically nil
Probotector aka Contra for me please!
