Top 15 Consoles of All Time

Editorials, Retro | Tyler C. | September 5, 2009 at 11:48 pm

Well we at Kokugamer thought it was about time to make a Top 15 consoles of all time list and if you don’t mind a few handhelds on this list then we will be giving you, our fans, a good list of the best consoles. The consoles will be judged in certain areas like: quality of hardware, quality of software, features brought to the generation it was introduced, lasting appeal, and finally the impact it made on the industry. So without further ado here is OUR Top 15 Consoles of All Time.

15 – Nintendo DS

nintendo-ds-lite

Seeing how this console has been out for 5 years and has already been succeeded by the DSi, we think its fair to start judging this handheld now. The DS is one of Nintendo’s best selling handhelds ever ( just below the Game Boy and the Game Boy Color). The system may have a plethora of games, but most of them are shovel ware. The reason this console is number 15 is because although it may have great sales and great hardware, the console fails to deliver more then 2 must have games every year.

Notable Games:
-Chrono Trigger
-Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
-Nintendogs

Good:
- Great Hardware
- Terrific sales
- Innovative for its time

Bad:
- Doesn’t have many quality games.
- Controls for most…. some games just don’t work with the touch screen.

14 – Nintendo Gamecube

gamecube
The purple lunchbox that tried, Nintendo’s successor to the Nintendo 64 did not do as well as many people thought the console would. While the system itself was a great console for a low price it only sold 21.74 million consoles worldwide. The console did however capitalize on Nintendo’s best franchises like: Super Smash Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. The Gamecube also marked the first time Nintendo made CD technology standard in their console.

Notable Games:
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Pikmin
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

Good:
- Great hardware
- Good software library
- Brought Nintendo to disk technology

Bad:
- Bad sales
- Didn’t Impact the industry much.

13 – Sega Dreamcast

DreamcastConsole
Even though this console was only in North America for 2 years and in Japan for 3, the Sega Dreamcast was Sega’s last console in the home console market. Although the console didn’t do bad for its first 2-3 years ( it sold almost 11 million ), Sega decided to cut its loses and announce on January 31, 2001 that it was no longer supporting the Dreamcast. The Sega Dreamcast was the first true console to have online gaming and have a built in modem. The Dreamcast was certainly ahead of its time. Because of great hardware, decent sales, and great games for the first two years the Dreamcast gets number 13 on our list.

Notable Games:
- Sonic Adventure
- Soul Calibur
- Crazy Taxi

Good:
- Great Hardware ( Ahead of its time )
- Good software considering it was only on the market for 2 years
- Pioneered Online Gaming

Bad:
- Only had decent sales ( Not bad, but not good either )
- The console was discontinued

12 – Sony PlayStation Portable

sony-psp-2000-slim

This device was the first handheld console to challenge Nintendo’s dominance over the handheld market and actually do well against Nintendo ( 50 million+ sold and still going ). This console has also been out for 4-5 years (depending on where you live), and is also getting a successor soon, the PSPGo! So we believe it is fair to judge this console also. With a decent library of games, great sales, great hardware, and some good marketing (better then PS3’s marketing) the console has officially laid a foundation for more handhelds to be made by Sony (ala PSPGo!). It has also made people believe that 3d games can be done on handhelds and be GOOD. For pushing the Handheld industry Sony’s PSP is number 12.

Notable Games:
- God of War: Chains of Olympus
- Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
- Monster Hunter Freedom Unite
- Killzone: Liberation

Good:
- Terrific Hardware
- Great Games
- Decent Marketing
- First Handheld to be able to play against your friends online
- Great Sales

Bad:
- The nub (nuff said)
- Didn’t impact the industry as most would have hoped.

11 – Nintendo Game Boy

gameboy

Yes, this is the handheld that…. well made the handheld market so profitable. With games like Tetris on the go how can you not like the system. Combined with the sales of the Game Boy Color it almost sold 119 million. There isn’t really much to say except “Thank you Nintendo”. Thank you for creating this awesome handheld.

Notable Games:
- Tetris
- Battletoads
- Street Fighter II

Good:
- Great Sales
- Good Hardware
- Lasting Appeal
- Lots of Games
- Good Control Layout

Bad:
- No Color! (I’m Kidding)

10 – Microsoft Xbox

xbox_console
When Sega dropped out of the console race someone had to take it place. The Xbox filled that void perfectly. With graphics that wowed (just like the Dreamcast), some great games (like the Dreamcast), and online ( Hey! like the Dreamcast!). The only difference from the Dreamcast is that its made by Microsoft, it sold more, and the Xbox stayed the entire generation.

Notable Games:
- Halo
- Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic
- Jade Empire
- Psychonauts

Good:
- Great Online (Xbox Live)
- Great Games
- Lasting Appeal
- Good Sales (about 24 million)

Bad:
- The controller was on the large side
- The console itself didn’t impact the industry much.( But impacted Microsoft enough to stay in the industry)

9 – Sega Genesis

sega-genesis-game-console
Sega’s best selling console. That’s right it was Sega’s best selling console believe it or not. The console sold about 29 million. With games like Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the now famous marking campaign ” Genesis does what Nintendon’t” Genesis helped Sega’s hardware division, even if it was only for a little while.

Notable Games:
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Golden Axe
- Sonic & Knuckles

Good:
- Great System
- Lasting Appeal
- Good Games
- Good Sales
- Great console for its time
- Effective Marketing Campaign

Bad:
- The Controller (comes down to preference)

8 – Nintendo Game Boy Advance

9423298117686276
Improving upon what the Game Boy Color did, Game Boy Advance had smoother graphics and game play. Some of Nintendo’s best selling games are on the system. When the system released my mind went crazy. At the time I loved Pokemon and Gold/Silver versions of the game just blew my mind away with some great animations and good looking art design. The console sold well, had a great marketing campaign, great games, great control scheme, and it was very popular to have it.

Notable Games:
- Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire
- Super Mario Advance
- Final Fantasy VI Advance

Good:
- Lasting Appeal
- Great Hardware
- Awesome Software
- Great Sales
- The Marketing Was Good

Bad:
- Mmmmmmm……. Hold on let me think………

7 - Nintendo Game Boy Color

Nintendo’s best selling handheld. Because of this console, Nintendo can make 3 generations of failures for home consoles and still be in the industry working on another system. All of this thanks to this little device. Many handhelds tried to go up against this mighty little guy to no prevail. Maybe it was the hardware, maybe it was the games or it might have been the awesome marketing. No matter how you look at it, the Game Boy Color changed the handheld industry forever.

Notable Games:
- Pokemon Red/Blue/Green
- Kirby’s Dream Land
- Mega Man II

Good:
- Very long lasting appeal
- Great Hardware
- Some of the best handheld games
- Aggressive Marketing
- Powerful impact on the Handheld console industry

Bad:
- Still looking for something bad.

6 - Super Nintendo Entertainment System

snes_sys
When this console came out in North America I was born. It was like destiny that I became so involved in video games. Anyways back on subject, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES for short) was a powerful contender in the game industry during the 16-bit era. It sold almost 50 million units worldwide once it was done. With every great game going on this console. No wonder it won the the 16-bit console war.

Notable Games:
- Super Mario World
- Donkey Kong Country
- Star Fox

Good:
- Everything

Bad:
- Nothing ( I like to keep things simple and to the point )

5 – Nintendo 64

N64
Nintendo is on a roll on this list ( I just noticed), there’s a reason for that. Nintendo knows how to create hardware and good software to go with it. The 64 was the successor to the most loved console ever ( during that time), and it needed to deliver. Fortunately it did with a great controller, good advertising, sick games and reliable hardware. Games like Star Fox 64 and Super Mario 64 were some of the best games on the console, if not Nintendo’s best made games ever. It is these reasons that the Nintendo 64 places so high on our list.

Notable Games:
- Super Mario 64
- Star Fox 64
- The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

Good:
- Great Games
- Great Hardware
- Great Marketing
- Great Everything
- Oh….and uhhhh….. the system has Lasting Appeal

Bad:
- Lost Market Share for Nintendo

4 – Sony PlayStation

PS1
C-c-c-combo breaker, sorry couldn’t resist. The PS1 did however stop Nintendo’s dominance over the industry. One of the reasons gaming became so mature and appealed to the masses IS because of the original PlayStation. Before PlayStation people thought gamers were just little kids or some nerd in their parents basement. After PlayStation however the masses saw something else. Video games became a popular medium. The industry boomed when PlayStation released and the industry was up there with movie industry and the music industry. And it’s all thanks to the original PlayStation…….. oh did I mention some of the most loved franchises started on PlayStation like Spyro, Metal Gear Solid, and Resident Evil? Must have slipped my mind.

Notable Games:
- Resident Evil
- Metal Gear Solid
- Gran Turismo
- Final Fantasy VII
- Grand Theft Auto
- Spyro
- Crash Bandicoot

Good:
- Great Marketing
- Quality Hardware
- Impressive Games
- Has Lasting Appeal
- Push the Industry Mainstream
- Pushed Console Makers to make disk technology standard

Bad:
- Absolutely nothing, I would actually be surprised if someone found something wrong with the original PlayStation

3 – Atari 2600

Atari2600
Want to know why games aren’t built into the systems anymore? Because of the Atari 2600 of course. It was the first console to have switchable cartridges. This system was responsible for the rise of the game industry but also was responsible for the 2 year long crash of the video game industry ( ya the crash only lasted two years ). Its because of this system that people noticed video games and what they were (and also drew some unwanted attention for some pornographic games). The console also has the longest lifespan of any console ( 1977- 1992, ya it stuck around for quite some time). Thanks to this console, video games (software) was made possible and that is why it is number 3 on our list.

Notable Games:
- Pac-Man
- Breakout
- Pitfall!

Good:
- Controls
- Quality Hardware
- Innovated and pushed the industry forward
- The reason for the rise of Video Games

Bad:
- The reason for the 2 year crash of the industry.

2 – Nintendo Entertainment System

nes-console
Deemed the “savior” of the video game industry and Nintendo’s best selling home console (really) this system really did it for the industry. One, every game had to be given a stamp of approval from Nintendo so things like the porn games on the Atari 2600 would never happen again. Two, it was the best selling console…… ever, up until that point ( then PS1 came out), selling almost 62 million consoles worldwide. Metriod, Mario, Zelda and many other popular franchises had their start here, on the NES. Thanks to this console gaming became popular again and began anew. Although I myself wouldn’t call Nintendo the “savior” of the industry. I mean after all it was only a 2 year crash. But if that’s how everyone sees it then I guess that’s how it is. This is after all just one mans opinion.

Notable Games:
- The Legend of Zelda
- Donkey Kong
- Final Fantasy
- Mario Bros.
- Mega Man
- Metriod
- Ninja Gaiden
- Any other franchises you can think of for a Nintendo console.

Good:
- Awesome Software
- Great Hardware
- Began the Rebirth of the Industry
- Pushed the industry farther then anyone imagined
- Lasting Appeal

Bad:
- To tell the truth as we go up the list its nearly impossible to fault these consoles for anything. Basically what I’m trying to say is no there is nothing bad about this console.

1 – Sony PlayStation 2

Okay don’t tell me you didn’t see this coming. Remember everything good about the PS1? Now add smoother graphics, quality hardware, a DVD player, and some of the best games EVER CREATED, and what you get. We’ll first you get a PlayStation 2. Second you get the best console (sales, quality hardware, and games) EVER. If you had to chose your favorite game before this gen most people would say their favorite game was a PS2 game. Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy X, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, God of War, Kingdom Hearts, Ratchet & Clank, Jak and Daxter, Sly Cooper, SOCOM, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Devil May Cry, The Getaway, Yakuza, And Metal Gear Solid are just some of the exclusive games/franchises that were on the PS2. The PS2 was also the console that brought in many hardcore and casual gamers and didn’t cater to one particular crowd. PS2 also has some of the longest appeal I have ever seen for a console with people still happily playing their PS2’s to this day. No wonder the console is almost at the 140 million sales point. The PlayStation 2 IS the best selling home console, ever.

Notable Games:
- Gran Turismo 3 and 4
- Devil May Cry
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
- Final Fantasy X
- Metal Gear Solid 2
- Kingdom Hearts
- God of War 1 & 2
- Shadow of the Colossus
- Any other games that people like. Everyone has a favorite PS2 game.

Good:
- Most Sold Home Consoles Ever
- Best Library of Games Ever
- Quality Hardware
- Great Marketing
- Longest Lasting Appeal I’ve Ever Seen
- Push the Industry Harder Then Any Console Before It
- Pushed the DVD Format Forward

Bad:
- Nothing

So there’s our list. I understand that some people may not like where some consoles are placed, but keep in mind that this is OUR opinion and it’s okay for you to have a different opinion. Great List!!!!….unlike the IGN one…..

  2. 1up Gamer 1up Gamer says:

    My thoughts on the list:
    1. The PSP should be no where on the list.
    2. The Gameboy needs to be much higher on the list, or atleast in front of the Gameboy color.
    3. Xbox 360 > Xbox.
    4. The SNES was THE console when it came out, while the N64 was the first big down-step for Nintendo. So, SNES > N64.

  3. IDemonstalkerXI IDemonstalkerXI says:

That is a sensible list, yup IGN must have a mild case of teh bias

  4. nate-dog7 nate-dog7 says:

can’t argue with this… but i think the psp will move up the list by the end of it’s lifespan

  5. Namco arcade Namco arcade says:

Apart from the spelling errors — “Theirs our list” should be “There’s our list.” — this one makes a lot more sense than the stupid IGN list.

Glad the old Xbox is up there. I loved my Xbox, hacked or not. The 360 is a comparative piece of crap. I think the old one had more than a few years left in it!

  6. d d says:

The only thing I disagree on is the SNES’s place on the list. I think it should be first since it’s the most childhood-memory-inducing, but that’s really just my opinion. So, despite my disagreement, I think this list is spot on.

  7. death183 death183 says:

Wii??? 360??? PS3???? come on, they shoyld be up there….

  8. Admir J. Admir J. says:

    Hi Death,

Wii – has produced nothing but shovel ware in its life time. I know I know, you’re going to throw Metroid, Mario and Zelda at me, aand maybe a few others – that makes it a total of five great franchises, but compared to the PS3 and 360, and even other consoles that have come out, it does not share the same software selection as most other consoles.

PS3 – well it just recently got its act together, and you can’t place it really in the top because Sony needs to earn the respect of the gaming community with the PS3 more than they already have. You can’t just earn respect with half a decade of games, but it’s getting there.

Xbox 360 – Well until it becomes a reliable console, and I mean hardware wise by that, then it can earn a spot on the list, until than, it’s fine where it’s at and not deserving on the list of best consoles of all time.

I’m sure many of you would agree with my reasoning, while all three are great they need to be around for a longer period of time.

  9. name name says:

so theres nothing bad about the ps2?
how about the cheap a$$ laser which i had to replace in 6 of my bloody PS2s since i bought them.
or the lack of a hard disk, the xbox had one, i was expecting sony to bring a external plug in one for the PS2.
or the lack of achievements, the xbox had them i thought sony would add them in, OR ATLEAST HAVE THEM FOR LAUNCH OF THE PS3!! talk about being late for the party!
or the lack of proper internet support, with proper online gaming, yes it was there on later PS2 games but it was buggy half asked and lacked many features.
the PS2 like the PS3 had great games, and exclusives coming out of the WAZOO! but when it comes to ease of use, and features the xbox wiped the floor with the ps2 and the 360 is wiping the floor with the ps3.

Before you get flamed, which I’m sure will commence sooner rather than later, let me point out a fact you’re going to hear a lot.

The failure rate of Xbox 360’s is more than 50%. That’s ridiculous. Now, I own one and love it, but in terms of numbers, the PS3 is the more reliable system.

Also, not everyone’s experience is dictated by achievements and/or the online community. Most people believe the PS3 to have better exclusive titles. Having stronger software is more important to most gamers than having stronger hardware. That’s why the PS2, numerically, is the most successful system of all time, as well as the most critically acclaimed, despite being less powerful than the original Xbox. It had an amazing software list.

    Anyway, thanks for the comment!

  11. Xbot Xbot says:

Sony PS3 much higher then xbox or game cube for sure.

  16. ben ben says:

its a smart thing to not include tis-gen consoles

  17. Ali Ali says:

SNES should be higher on the list, it was like the best console ever! Also Dreamcast deserves a higher spot.

  18. IGN LIST WAS BETTER IGN LIST WAS BETTER says:

    PSone:
“Absolutely nothing, I would actually be surprised if someone found something wrong with the original PlayStation”

    DRE

    PS2:
    “nothing”

    DRE

what a bs list ps2 higher than NES?!?
    NES saved the gaming industry!!

  19. name name says:

    @ dylan.
1 thats from a survey you cant take that as facts, people may of lied because they hate M$ or because there angry their system just broke.
or they got a bad batch of customers.
my 360 has NEVER broken on me, the day i brought it home my mother tripped on the internet cable flinging my 360 off the table falling onto my subwoofer leaving a massive gash in the side case and it STILL works like brand new.
my ps3 on the other hand has been in 3 times in under 2 years, once for bluray laser went, 1 for YLOD, and last for the console would not turn on at all.
so as for reliability for me the 360 is 300% more reliable since in the time i had my 360 my ps3 has broken 3 360 broken 0.

2 where did i say the 360 does not break?
its quite obvious it does, hence anyone i speak to is on at least their 3rd system where ive been lucky may be they need to learn how to look after electronics.

3 i could not care less about achievements and trophies, BUT i was refering to features when it comes to features M$ has sony beat.

4 dident i just say quote “the PS2 like the PS3 had great games, and exclusives coming out of the WAZOO!”
ill be the first to say the most important thing to a console is its exclusives.
and like i said when it comes to games sony is kicking M$ A$$.
but when it comes to features and ease of use M$ is kicking sonys A$$.

another thing sony need to learn to do, and i cant see them winning this “console war” until they do so is.
they need to SPEND SOME MONEY!!!!!
i dont know what the deal with the GTAIV DLC or going MP was but 5 million dollars says GTAIV could of stayed a ps3 exclusive if sony was willing to pay like M$.

    rockstar with GTAIV.
    bethesda with fallout 3
    infinity ward with COD MW2
have all chosen to bring either timed or complete exclusive DLC for the 360 because M$ is paying them.
sony has said, and keeps saying they refuse to pay for exclusivity.
another example, LA Noire was a PS3 exclusive now its going multiplatform because the development costs on that game is the LARGEST R* has ever spent on a game thats saying something since GTAIV would of cost a hell of a lot.
50 bucks says if sony said look we will pay so much to keep the game exclusive R* would of jumped at the opportunity.
or FFXIII another prime example SE had spent so much money on developing the game they could not afford to keep it exclusive so in comes hero M$ with their checkbook.
    get the point?
sony need to learn you have to SPEND MONEY TO MAKE MONEY!

    another field.
sony and this region delay BS normally when M$ releases a game, it is out everywhere within 2 or so days.
whats available in the US is available in EU is available everywhere EG guides Limited editions Betas.
i wish i could say the same for sony.
most of the time they release games here in australia 3 4 5 weeks after the US date.
most of the time we miss out on limited editions
90% of the time we miss out on limited editions, most of the time we miss out on guides, most of the time we miss out on betas.
wheres my KZ2 limited edition the US and EU got one.
wheres my R2 limited edition the US and EU got one.
wheres my KZ2 beta the US got one.
wheres my uncharted 2 beta the US got one.
i tried to get into both, but was not allowed because its a “US exclusive”
im sorry havent PS3s been released in australia yet?
havent i paid sony enough money yet?

thats 3 things that sony need to fix up NOW! to win this so called “console war”
once they done that its given.
    games sony > M$
    features M$ > Sony
customer support and treating EVERYONE like valued customers M$ > Sony.

    @name

First, your grammar is horrible; being from an English speaking country, you think you could at least use some punctuation and sentence structure.

Two, your complaint about your region not getting games as soon? Utter tripe. If you are so concerned about it, why don’t you move to a country where not only are the games released sooner but there is also less censorship of the games to begin with? I’m sorry to be so harsh, but that’s your bag to deal with living down under.

Or, and this is a novel thought, why don’t you import the games? Sure, its more money involved, but US and UK gamers have been doing it for years to get items that are exclusive to one region (read: Japan).

  23. Your bias. Your bias. says:

  24. Aaron R. Aaron R. says:

360 is a fantastic gaming machine, and in future console lists it will make the top no doubt. But you can’t throw in any console that hasn’t reached it’s full potential yet. Lets wait and see how the PS3, 360 and the Wii are in 5 years time. Opinions might change

  25. HoLy WoWzoRs HoLy WoWzoRs says:

Yeah I can tell 1 bad thing for the PS1 and 2.

The Ps2 = Same problem here and sometimes, it scratched teh disc

  31. MaulYoda Jason R says:

    @ 1UP Gamer

I agree with you. The 360 is better than the original Xbox and the PSP shouldn’t be on this list

On my own personal note, I’m suprised that the DS made it onto the list and not the Wii. Also, there should either just be the original Game Boy on this list (or Game Boy Color), but not all three. And Pokemon Gold/Silver were on the Game Boy Color, not Game Boy Advance. Otherwise, I agree with the rest of the list

  32. Schu-Man Schu-Man says:

Wii? Motion controls? An idea that has revolutionized the industry enough to cause Microsoft and Sony to come up with their own versions. How awesome was it to play Wii Sports for the first time and actually manipulate objects on the screen by swinging your controller? Pretty darn awesome for me. I’m just saying, it should be on the list somewhere.

  33. Tyler C. Tyler C. says:

To everyone regarding the current gen consoles.

I intentionally took out the current gen consoles as it is not fair to judge the consoles this early. I thought I put that in the article but I guess not.

  34. Pozzy Pozzy says:

Bad about NES: the controller.. it sucked.. but the console was extremely awesome

  35. JL JL says:

For people talking about Wii’s motion controls and before anyone tries mentioning Natal…

November 4th, 2003. PlayStation 2’s Eye Toy released. (You as the controller 7-8+ years before Xbox’s Natal will release)
November 11th, 2006. PLAYSTATION 3 releases with Sixaxis motion controler. (Six axis control 8 days before the Wiimote release)
November 19th, 2006. Wii releases with Wii remote.
October 25th, 2007. PLAYSTATION 3’s PLAYSTATION EYE releases. PS3’s advanced version of the Eye Toy from PS2. (You as the controller 3-4 years before Natal will release)

  36. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

I disagree with huge parts of this list, and I disagree with a lot of the author’s reasons for placing even the ones I agree with. But there is one portion of the list that goes far beyond merely bad.

    The NES’s entry.

    1. Nintendo’s best selling home console? I know you’re excluding current gen from being in the LIST but that doesn’t mean you get to ignore the Wii’s EXISTENCE.
    2. Are you such a PS freak that you can’t even say the NES was the best selling console ever without taking a cheap shot about the PS1 selling more, despite that it happened two generations later? Or is it something else?
    3. And then you spend quite a bit of time undermining the NES’s accomplishments, apparently because ‘it couldn’t have been that bad if the NES made the industry recover’.

(cont’d. — didn’t post so I thought there might be a size limit)

    (part 2)
Overall this entry is full of praise that either is hesitant or which you then proceed to undermine. When contrasted with the eagerness with which you praise the PS2, the listwarz-worthy litany of games (even down to “The Getaway” which I frankly don’t even recognize), the way you repeat the phrase “quality hardware” like you’re trying to convince someone, etc. etc. … I think it’s clear that you felt the need to make the NES sound worse to justify putting it below the PS2, your clear favorite.

Disgraceful. I mean, you’re entitled to your opinion, but this behavior is not acceptable — even if it was unconscious, I think we should reasonably be able to expect to have someone writing these who is capable of overcoming at least the most blatant of fanboy urges.

    HOWEVER!

I do give you props for letting anyone post comments, and allowing dissension like what I just wrote. Many places don’t allow discussion that free and open and I thank you for it.

    @Final-Fan

I won’t comment on your analysis of the post, as that’s better left to the others who frequent our site.

But thank you for at least stating your opinion in an intelligent manner. We need more like you on here. Please continue posting as you do, and hopefully in the future it won’t be to state a negative opinion (one which I am not criticizing, but rather, I enjoy reading positive ones more :D )

Thanks for the comment. I’ll let Tyler defend himself directly, when and if he has the chance.

    Cheers!

    move country?
    seriously?
yea thats really practical, im going to move house spend several thousand dollars to fly over to the US, spend several hundred thousand dollars to buy a house and have to find a new job just so i can get games 3 weeks earlier?
if thats logic in your mind theres something seriously wrong.
games mean allot to me and i want to play them when everyone else is, if not before them but they dont mean several hundred thousand dollars to me.

OR, you could have read the more realistic suggestion “or you can just import” right below.

Consider yourself lucky that he chose the least insane thing you said to criticize, and put forward an argument so weak you could counter it.

  41. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

^ No, on second thought I think the least insane thing he said was “3 i could not care less about achievements and trophies, BUT i was refering to features when it comes to features M$ has sony beat”, although it’s extremely arguable.

December 2000, Sega releases Samba De Amigo. Posses far more accurate motion controls than the Wiimote or Six Axis.

Also, lets not forget that Six Axis was added to combat the Wii’s motion control and failed spectacularly.

  43. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

Far more accurate?? Source plz, otherwise I am inclined to laugh hysterically.

  44. Tyler C. Tyler C. says:

    @ Final-Fan

If I made it seem Like I bashed the NES I’m sorry. That was my first console, so in no way did I mean to disrespect it however I will address each of your concerns.

1)The NES is in fact Nintendo’s best selling home console ever selling over 60 million+. The Wii at the moment is at 50 million+ so I don’t think I was wrong stating that the NES was nintendo’s best selling home console.

2)I didn’t mean to take a cheap shot with the PS1 statment.I was simply stating that the NES was the best selling home console ever till the PS1 came around. I’m sorry if anyone took that the wrong way

    3) The NES was the first console to come out after the crash (which I stated was only 2 years long). And Sega and other companies started releasing consoles a year after Nintendo. I just strongly believe that Nintendo just happened to be the first company to make a console before its competiters. I don’t like the fact that Nintendo holds this “savior of the industry” title. But like I said in the article, thats my opinion.

I knew people wern’t going to be happy with this list because everyone views each of these consoles differently, and I still made it because I wanted my opinion heard (and because people were asking us to make one after IGN’s list).

I’m also sorry to anyone who thinks I’m a “PS Fanboy”. If I came across as that then I’m really sorry. I have owned every console released since the SNES (except the Dreamcast, but I did play it extensively) and I view the companys and consoles equily. Just because Sony releases a new product doesn’t mean I’m going to go out and buy it first day. They have to prove that their console is worth buying. Same with Microsoft and same with Nintendo. So Final-Fan I’m sorry if I offended you and I hope you keep coming back to the site to comment on my mistakes.

  45. Dave S. Dave S. says:

    @ Final Fan
Well, almost every reviewer agreed that Samba on the Wii was inferior to the Dreamcast version due to the Wii motion controllers not being able accurately recognize the motions as well as the Dreamcast Maracas. However they were built exactly for that, whilst the Wiimote is intended for all games/genres.

And let’s be honest, Six Axis control shouldn’t even really figure into any serious argument. It was a failure. Hence the upcoming ‘Sony motion wand’ or whatever you want to call it.

  46. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

First, Dave: I guess you know more about that specific game than me, so I’ll accept that, although I don’t think it establishes that Sega “did it first” in a serious way. I agree completely about the Sixaxis — the motion controls are a pale imitation of the Wii’s, “imitation” being the most important point.

  47. Chris W. Chris W. says:

nice list though the pic for the Playstation is the PS ONE which was the mini version. not the core console i just think it makes it mis leading lol just me nit picking though great list mate :)

  48. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

    Next, Tyler:
    1. Yeah, it was pointed out to me elsewhere that the Wii hasn’t outsold it yet.

    2. I just think it was unnecessary and what’s more, the way you wrote it made it sound like the NES’s title was ephemeral, when in fact it was the king for many years.

    3. If people think there literally wouldn’t be any consoles if not for the NES, then I agree they need to be set straight. But the fact is that most of those companies were responding to the NES’s success and in any case had no chance of doing anything like as well as the NES did. (You can argue fairly that they were partially held back by Nintendo’s strong-arm tactics, but only if you admit that Nintendo was already in the industry long enough to get that kind of influence, undermining your other point.) And Sega’s console came out 2 years later.

The home console industry would be a shadow of itself if not for Nintendo, and Sony would most certainly not be part of it.

But the most damning part of it IMO (which I admit I didn’t empasize all that much) lies in comparing the NES writeup to the PS2 writeup. For instance, you repeat the phrase “Quality Hardware” at least three times, when the PS2 was in fact infamous for disc drive failures. Actually I think it might have the worst hardware record of the major consoles in the last 2 decades other than the 360, which of course is in a class all its own for hardware failure.

  49. Tyler C. Tyler C. says:

    @Final-Fan

Everybody has different opinions on this matter, everyone. This topic is just one of the many topics in gaming where its ok to disagree with an opinion. After all at the end of the day this is an opinion article.

On your PS2 concerns, I had a PS2 for 4 years before I bought the next generation of consoles. I had the Slim version of it. To me it was a quality peice of hardware because I steped on the console ( by accident ) more then 3 times ( twice with boots on ) and the console still runs to this day. That is why I said it was a quality peice of hardware. But I guess you had a different experiance with the system. It my not be a “quality peice of hardware” to you, but it has been for me. To each their own I guess.

Lets just agree to disagree, and leave it at that.

  50. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

Well, all I’ll say in response to that is that my launch 360 hasn’t failed either, yet, and that doesn’t make the 360 “quality hardware”.

But if I can’t change your mind, there’s no reason to yell at you about it.

  51. Final-Fan Final-Fan says:

I mean, maybe I’ve got this all wrong. If this list was about YOUR PERSONAL EXPERIENCE with each console, then the fact that your individual PS2 was a beast DOES make it quality hardware.

Maybe I should have realized that when you said the DS only had two must have games per year, you meant two games you bought and liked per year.

Absolutely not, until their 10 year mark passes, they’ve only done good for the first half of their life they got another five and we’ll have to see how it all turns out.

I love the ps2 Ive got more games than I can remember on it….In fact Im still buying game for it.

  57. Shigeru Shigeru says:

This list sucks. The last half of consoles have nothing bad about them? The nes has great hardware? Hmm I wonder why there are so many well known tricks to make that shoddy 72 pin connector to work.
N64 had a great controller? Are you serious? Why no game+watch? It paved the way for gameboy. Gamegear was first handheld with girl color graphics on bright screen.
