Original Mass Effect Characters May Yet Return in ME 2

BioWare’s Marketing Manager Jarrett Lee has told fans that the reason for next to no announcements on the fate of the original Mass Effect playable cast is for the sake of wanting players “to be surprised at who is available as a squad mate when you play the game”.
Lee made the comments in a forum post regarding the new squad mates in ME 2 and he was quick to make sure nobody presumed the original cast would not be playable:
“We actually want you guys to be surprised at who is available as a squad mate when you play the game. Careful about jumping to conclusions that “so and so is no longer available” etc. Granted sometimes we’ll spell that out clearly, but we’re also trying hard to not spoil a bunch of really cool stuff so you can experience it first-hand when you play.”
He followed up his comments to clarify that it was purely to give a surprise to fans:
“It’s actually less of a marketing decision as far as what we’ve told you about old party members – the team genuinely wants to keep some things a surprise in the game and I’ve been respecting that wish.”
The only playable characters from Mass Effect that I’m aware of being carried over so far are Commander Shepard and Tali’Zorah. My favourite was Garrus, because he reminded me of those long-winded observation lounge conversations in Star Trek: TNG – boring, but very likeable.
