Nitrome has a new title out called Cave Chaos, and the game is pretty fun. You play as a hamster-ish little dude, and have found yourself in a mine (or cave…as the title suggests), with our only way of surviving…getting out! The main title screen has the options, first being help, which is where information about the game (very useful) is found. Such supportive tips include using the left and right arrow keys to run, press up to jump, and if you get held by an enemy to tap the left and right arrow keys to escape the foe’s mighty clutches. The help window also tells you different types of enemies you’ll face (something I didn’t realize on my first run.) One such enemy is Mr. Nibbles. He’ll run fast and try to hold onto you, in which your character’s movement is cut in half.
Throughout the levels, a few power-ups are present. Invincibility is one, where three glowy balls spin around your character. Unlike other invincibility items, this one has a three enemy kill technique. Each time you strike an opponent with it, you’ll loose a ball. The bomb item will destroy all enemies on screen, and the last power-up is the double jump. You seem to go even higher during your second jump, rather then your initial jump is capable of executing (appearing to me anyways.)
Next on the title screen, is the scores option with a picture of a trophy next to it. Click this to check out which players are leading the leader’s board and has racked up the most points in the game. Lastly, the credits option is also available. During gameplay, the player has the choice of pausing the game, turning the sound off, and disabling the sound effects. This is located on the upper right portion of the screen.
Once you begin, the objective is to run for your life through a cave that the platforms are consistently falling. A family of bats temporary builds up the ground and other objects your character runs across before, after a brief time, descending downward. Every level (20 in total) has a large light checkpoint to let the player know they have reached the end of that particular level. Jump over crates, barrels, and slime to reach the end. Collect gems throughout the game to earn more points in your overall score. Green ones are worth 50 and Red ones are 100. If you quit and decide to go back, the game will allow you to choose the level you wish to play, but only the ones you’ve completed.
The graphics in this game is stunning. Nice detail in a flash game. The controls are solid and not loose. The background compliments the main animation action nicely. Also, the sound effects during gameplay is crisp and precise. Bats making noises and the main character’s jumping, sounds great. The music is average and gives everyone the sense that all is not well inside the cave.
I give this game an eight out of ten.
