So for the most awesomely hardcore PC gamers(that’s me and you), Infinity Ward’s new server…destroying(?) service sounds quite awful. Without the benefit of dedicated server’s, how are we supposed to run mods/custom maps/porn tag’s if we can’t have a server that’s actually run by a person, and not a company who can set the bottom line on these things?
Well have no fear! Infinity Ward states that Modern Warfare’s “IWNET takes the benefits of dedicated servers and allows them to be utilized and accessed by every player, out of the box, while removing the barrier to entry for players unaware of how to maintain a server on their own.”
As the article goes on, it states that were looking at things some console games have enjoyed for years. Matchmaking/party system’s/and Valve-Anti-Cheat are all present to make sure these “servers” are up to par.
This is a tough one for me. While part of me loves that they’re basically making the PC version of Halo 3′s MP setup, part of me feels like another thing that made PC gaming…well…PC gaming, is dying. With LAN support being pulled from Starcraft 2, and now this…developers seem to be moving away from what makes each individual gaming system awesome, and going for a more standard feel across the board. And this will most likely cut costs for them. Which I’m sure they’re happy about.
But people all the time talk about making PC gaming a more unified gaming front against the console’s, and if this is successful, could push other companies to begin adopting these types of things for PC gaming. Which, really, isn’t a bad thing. Just keep my dedicated server’s please.
Thoughts? Opinions? Comments? Dancing robot questions? He’s just happy the cheaters won’t win. Even if he technically is one himself.
