It appears that prior to signing the contract to reinvent Disney‘s dying icon, Warren Spector was working on a “spiritual successor” to his long-running Deus Ex franchise, which he had near completion, but just lacked a publisher at the time.

In a recent little chat with Variety, Spector revealed that after a failed attempt to secure the rights from Eidos to his beloved creation, he began work on a Deus Ex-esque game of his own at his Junction Point studio. “I sort of filed the serial numbers off,” added Spector, of the near-future science fiction game.

“There were and still are Deus Ex stories I would like to tell,” said Spector. “That story is not done for me.”

Spector may yet be able to fulfill his dream, however, as Disney acquired the rights to the game when it bought Junction Point Studios, but it looks like fans of series will have to settle for Eidos Montreal’s upcoming prequel, Deus Ex 3, as Spector is far too busy with Epic Mickey to tackle anything else at this point.
