Activision is wasting no time cracking down on pirates whom illegally distribute their upcoming FPS baby, Modern Warfare 2. As recently demonstrated by the apprehended Craigslist seller, Activision has shown that it will literally hunt down anyone that tries to get in between them and any profit their game might bring to the company.
Following the discovery of someone offering a Modern Warfare 2 Xbox 360 bundle on Craigslist, the publisher wasted no time in hiring a private investigator to track down and apprehend the suspect.
After IPCyberCrime tracked down the person responsible for the sell, the investigator also discovered that he was an employee at a local retailer, who had originally stolen the bundles with some friends, and planned to put them up for sell on Craigslist. The sellers were later turned over to the store’s loss prevention department.
A word of advice for all you Modern Warfare 2 pirate would-be’s, Activision is a VERY rich company. They have more than enough money to hire more than a thousand of these so called “private eyes”, and as shown by this little incident, they are not afraid to show you, or anyone else for that matter, how serious they are about not sharing profit with non-investors.
Do you guys think this is fair on Activision’s side, or should we have the right to do whatever we like online?

I’m not entirely sure what to make of this myself, but logically speaking, it seems sort of reasonable of Activision to do this…
I mean, what would you do if you and a publisher worked out a deal to get a game you’ve been working on for that last 5 years up on XBLA and PSN, only to have the publisher tell you that your game is only going to make you $100.00 because apparently anyone can get the game for free through the internet?
I’d be pretty mad if that was my game everyone was playing for free… Just a though.
What about you? How do you feel about this?
None of the games are in making for 5 years. Most of these 1 2 3 editions of games run same engines. When you have an engine for the game you want to create it is easy to go from there.. Heck, even an engine for the game can be written in less than a year. It all depends how many developers are working on it…
However, i think these fellas did bad thing, ripping of someones software making copies of it then selling it, is a serious crime..
@ Σ-MMX.
I agree with you. Regardless of the time a game spends in development, it’s still only the right of those who worked on it to collect any profit. I’d hate to sound like a douche bag, but once you really look at it from the publisher’s perspective, it all seems within fair ground. :-/
Piracy is theft so anyone who plays these games on a chipped console deserve everthing they get.
Remember that News post about no dedicated servers and the game being originally delayed on PC being full of people saying they would copy the game? I’ve always wanted to say this….I told you so!
I do not see anything wrong with Chipped Consoles or Modded Consoles, some of them perform better than original hardware. Saying such thing because it is capable of reading pirated software is not that great comparison. Why do we Mod PC’s?
If performance is what you going after then hell i will mod my brain when it comes to modding. However, buying games and having legal copies of it is the best thing, you know you can register your game and the key under your name..
Everything that can be modified to something better, for sure is a good thing..
There is a difference between Modded Consoles and Actions of Such People who pirate and then go sell someone else software, like in the case above.. He got what he deserves…
@ E-MMX
Oh i understand what your have said, but what i was saying was people who only chip/Mod there Computer/Console to play Pirate games. Deserve to be punished as it is against the law, to make/own counterfeit goods
@Chris W: You are right, i agree with ya. They do deserve to get punished.. Good thing Activision did it.. It was time..
It’s up to the pirate to be sneaky. If they can’t, then they will obviously pay for it in some way.
