Modern Warfare 2 Beats The Dark Knight for Sales Record
News, Xbox 360 | Admir J. | November 14, 2009 at 2:57 pmCall of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has been one of the most anticipated first person shooters this generation, yes even passing Halo 3 with the hype. So with that in mind, who didn’t know the game was going to set sales records? No surprise there, we all expected the game would most likely set some kind of a new record in entertainment sales. Not only was Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 one of the highest selling games this year by selling 4.7 million copies opening day bringing in some $320 plus million dollars but it also blew away Hollywood films to become the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever.
Combined U.S and U.K. sales brought in $335 million dollars and counting. The video game surpassed the opening weekend of The Dark Knight, which only grossed in $171 million dollars back in July of 2008.
A game doesn’t sell this much by it self of course, everything from millions of dollars being spent on advertising during Monday and Sunday night football games to nearly perfect reviews from such big outlets as Game Informer, IGN and GameSpot, as well as some not so high score such as here at Koku Gamer. These reasons along with the past Call of Duty titles have made this franchise a yearly buy for a gamer.
While the game did great it’s opening day, only time will tell how many copies Modern Warfare 2 will sell. Can it beat its predecessor? Or will it be the new video game sensation? Comment below and let us know. No registration is required to comment.
Note: This wasn’t to compare who’s better, nor to prove that gaming industry makes more. It’s simply some interesting figures. Please keep your comment clean.

No, not “boxed sales to boxed sales”.
How are you going to bring fanboys into this?
How are you really going to bring any gaming into this?
This is strictly about the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever.
Get your stuff together, okay?

171 Million < 335 Million
are yous stupid you cant say $60 times first of all they would of made at least $20 – $30 profit for each sold retailers get money too theres also shipping cost and packaging and the prices vary in different regions
Cost of a single movie ticket: c. $10.
Cost of a single game disc: c. $60.
So unless Modern Warfare 2’s sales (money-wise) go six times above Dark Knight’s income (money-wise), Dark Knight will still be ahead in terms of how many people have experienced it.
Ok how about we put it this way, as of the week before last the fastest selling game in the world was Dragon Quest XI which sold 3.9 million copies and it’s only out in Japan! COD:MW2 just beat that record a week later. There we go, obvious statistics, obvious money maker.
Alex C, if you represent the Kotaku community as one of their members shame on you. You miss understood the article, which is your problem, but do NOT come in here and disrespect others because of your inability to do math.
I didn’t really expect less for this game. Everyone I know has heard of Modern Warfare so when this game hit it already had a huge fan base to start off from, but still It’s crazy how many people bought it.
What about Grand Theft Auto IV?
