With reports of players failing to get through the ‘Easy’ difficulty due to the stupidity of AI companions in Left 4 Dead 2, a video has backed this up by showing just how hilariously bad the AI can be in the sequel.
Laugh out loud material, yet that’s really how bad the AI is in Left 4 Dead 2.
Left 4 Dead’s AI was bad; not arguably bad, just plain bad. But you could at least still trot on through the maps on your own, even on the ‘Advanced’ difficulty. Valve decided to make the single player maps vaster and harder in Left 4 Dead 2. Unfortunately, it seems they forgot to perform any tweaking to the AI. So while you could barely make it through with Larry, Curly and Moe last time around, you’re screwed now.
As I write this article, I’ve had to retry the third stage of the Dark Carnival map 6 times now because *SPOILER* the AI refuses to run around the rollercoaster tracks. *SPOILER ENDS*
You may ask why I’m playing alone. Well, I’d like to know why too because nobody has joined my game since the lobby, begging the question of sales. With no-one on my 100-strong friends list playing the game, I wonder if it has suffered at the hands of Modern Warfare 2.
Oh, and Valve decided to (kindly) switch off the server because I was idle while writing this…thanks Valve.

I agree the AI does suck and it does piss me off alot but I can still get through Easy not as good as was able to on L4D1 mind you but I still can hopefully Valve will fix it *Cough* Doubt It *Cough*
The friendly AI in L4D2 does suck, but not more than in L4D1, RE5, Gears of war, Army of Two, GTA and various other games. Not many people know how to design proper friendly AI (even Bungie has serious problems with driving vehicles segments in Halo)
But if people can’t finish L4D2 solo game on easy then it’s not the AI who fails…
Meh… who plays L4D2 or 1 alone? the game was built from the get-go as a 4 player co-op… They should have spend their money on AC2 if they want to play alone…
I completed all five campaigns on normal difficulty without dying in singleplayer. The ai is fine and you suck, this article is missleading.
The ai appears to be designed to let you take the lead, which in SP is what you want. If you want them to be like real people go online for Christ sake.
Well, in that video, the player completely failed first. If the player is incompetent, the AI will follow suit. I haven’t had any issues, but I know how to play. The rollercoaster portion that you mentioned? I got through that first try.

While the video is exaggerated, you can’t defend the AI’s stupidity in this game.
But I have heard reports of people struggling on Normal and even Easy. You can argue all you want, but if someone is struggling on Easy then surely something is up…
Even with players I am still yet to see the end of Dark Carnival. That Gate section is frikkin impossible
I got past the gate section… the next part is freaking hard too though.
