When the masses demand gruel, give them gruel I say. Alas, Green Day: Rock Band is upon us. This is what happens when the unsavory becomes common and appreciated. If game developers have learned one thing it is that giving consumers something other than the same rubbish will likely result in them turning their noses up at it and firmly fastening their velcro wallets. We often revert to what we know such as the generic and ultimately forgotten FPS which comes out each month. The critically acclaimed more than often bow to the pretty and stupid. While I understand it is natural to be frugal, or even cheap, at some point you would hope that people would wake up.
Popular music is a joke these days and it is our fault. A majority of radio stations in North America play the most irritating and cheap music available. Sometimes I wonder if the owners and managers of these stations joke in private together about how stupid and musically unaware we are. The fact that the Black Eyed Peas have sustained popularity is an mind-boggling. They should have gone the way of Vanilla Ice a long time ago, but instead “Boom Boom Pow” will be one of the songs our children look back at and mock us with. The problem is that we are too lazy to discover new bands and that is sometimes the only way to find good music. A few short moments on any one of the immense online music databases would reveal a horde of talent.
Like the Black Eyed Peas, Green Day is another band that should have disappeared long ago. They are the epitome of mediocrity having offered little substance to the listener since their highly recognized Dookie in 1994, and they have stalled artistically since then. Later hollow efforts such as their album American Idiot feel like a high school student’s poorly thought out political science paper. The reality is that Billie Joe is a 38-year-old make-up wearing wanker who berates the establishment that he is clearly a part of. Way to stick it to the man Billie!

Like Activision, EA is milking Rock Band too.
It is fitting that the goliath music game genre and Green Day finally combine forces. They are both exhausted and haven’t yielded anything worth wasting your money on in a long time. Green Day is a name that will attract a few kids back to the series but the sales of yesteryear are not even within target. A quick playthrough on a friend’s system will suffice as the excitement will wane quickly after suffering through “Wake Me Up When September Ends” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams.” If The Beatles version of the game sold only moderately well, then Green Day’s version will be a basket case.
In the end, we must blame ourselves for this game being made. Alongside the other music giants of our time, Green Day stands limp and barren, but we constantly come back to fawn over them. They are the whores of the industry but we are the clients that slum with them. How can such a group be featured in a major title? Ask for dog poo in a mint-scented bag and you shall receive. Our poor taste in music is to blame, and I’m still hoping for Rock Band: Coldplay!

That Rock Band: Coldplay comment is a joke, right?
@ Ron
Yes it’s a joke of course.
Honestly if they make Rock Band Cold Play I will definately buy it
You’re tossing around phrases like “our poor taste in music is to blame…” quite loosely. If I wanted someone to speak for me I certainly wouldn’t want it to be a bitter journalist from a hick gaming website.
The Internet Fallacy is in full effect here.
“I don’t like something, therefore it is obviously not good, and anyone who does has no taste.”
Opinions can’t by their nature be wrong. That said, I couldn’t disagree with you more about Green Day. They are a great band and American Idiot is an awesome CD – one that is infinitely better than Dookie or anything else they ever came out with in the 90′s. I would love to see what is on your ipod that would make you write this story. You probably have a bunch of one hit bs that you believe is better than what Green Day has accomplished. American Idiot is an epic album. It actually has a story behind the songs. I obviously can’t change your myopic view of the band, but I wanted to post a different view of the band.
The one thing that I would agree with you on is that RB: Green Day won’t sell well. I am dating myself with this comment, but the only band that could trully carry a game like RB is U2. Like them or not, they have a cult like following and a ton of hits that everyone at a party would know.
I love websites with self-righteous writers who think that because they don’t like something it is irrelevant. You sound like the emo kid standing outside of the local record shop who was angry that Green Day went “mainstream”. Obviously people just like bad music though, American Idiot has sold over 14 million copies worldwide in an age where music piracy runs rampant. Not like they don’t have a Broadway show either or anything like that.
I think EA made this game based on what songs we bought in their Rock Band Network. Some strange bands have 10+ songs, and… Iron Maiden has just 3. Its insane, if you ask me, but its true. =P
While I do think that a lot of todays music sucks, thats my opinion, just like you thinking green day sucks is your opinion. There are plenty of people out there who like them. Does that make the musically idiotic? No. Thats what they like. This article is ridiculously ostentatious and basically belittles the game and the gamers who by because they LIKE something.
nice article but i have to disagree on EA milking Rock Band as much as Activision does Guitar Hero. There have only been four major console rock band games since 2007 (Rock Band 1, Rock Band 2, The Beatles: Rock Band, and Lego Rock Band) while Guitar Hero has had about eight since 2007 (Guitar Hero 3, Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, Guitar Hero: World Tour, Guitar Hero: Metallica, Guitar Hero: Smash Hits, Guitar Hero 5, Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and Band Hero.
They equally milk their franchises!
What people don’t realize is that some bands just suck. It’s not an opinion. It’s just the way it is. And Green Day is one of them.
@Geralnd Owen
The 20+ million people in the United States that have purchased their records in the US alone make what you just said invalid.
@ G.Rand
Selling a lot of records doesn’t prove they’re any good. 50 Cent sold a tonne too but he is crap…all image.
I just completely gave up on American…no English music alltogether in 1998 after 3 years of nothing but shit from every genre available on th eradio, & over the decade, music has unfortunately gotten worse.
I’m going to assume that Rock Band is sippose to be like Guitar Hero or something. The best guitar talent I’ve heard is probably from Japan, mostly the indie & metal bands, but also more mainstream bands like La’Cryma Cristi, Aucifer, Moi Dix Mois…hell all of them harder than we do….
& America is dragging the rest of the world down with it’s sucky influence. I blame America for how South Korea has sounded since 2002.
But there is this one American “band” (animators f**king around with a guitar & a mic) called Limozeen that has some pretty good guitar.
The fact that the Black Eyed Peas have sustained popularity is an mind-boggling
LOL fail
Spellchecked repost: -_- Damn you, lack of edit button.
I’m going to assume that Rock Band is supposed to be like Guitar Hero or something. The best guitar talent I’ve heard is probably from Japan, mostly the indie & metal bands, but also more mainstream bands like La’Cryma Cristi, Aucifer, Moi Dix Mois…hell all of them rock harder than we do….
There is absolutely nothing wrong with either Green Day, or Coldplay. I’d agree with you on Black Eyed Peas, but the fact that they sell so much it means that they create music that [some] people want to listen to. And this should be respected in itself.
Let me explain something to you, from a fellow tech journalist (used to write for an operating systems news site, but then also tried my luck with music reviews): music is never good or bad. Music is simply a mirror of someone’s life, that “clicks” when they hear it. This is why some people like a particular genre or band, and their friends can’t understand why. It’s because the life experiences of that listener has wired his/her brain in a way that requires different audio stimulation than the guy next to them.
Therefore, we simply can’t say that “this genre or band is rubbish”. We can only speak for our likes/dislikes, but we can’t and shouldn’t say that another type of sound is “wrong musically”.
A few months ago I made the mistake to write on my own blog about how much I hate Animal Collective, Dirty Projectors and Grizzly Bear and all that hipster stuff. It was obviously a mistake, because as much more as I listen to that music, the more I get it (although I still can’t stomach Dirty Projectors). The truth is, the people who like that type of music are mostly people who grew up on huge cities, while I grew up on a mountain. Obviously, I can’t connect the way they can with that music. But that doesn’t make them wrong for listening to it. I know that much now.
Basically, what I’m telling you here is that there’s absolutely no good or bad music. There are just sound waves, and unique brain wiring that attracts to different waves each time.
As for the radio playing garbage music, it’s not their fault. Listeners want to listen to very stereotypical and easy to understand melodies (that’s why all radio bands sound so derivative of each other). But that’s not the listener’s fault either. It’s life’s. I have explained my position more here about why radio doesn’t play indie music, have a read.
I think that the simple chords will probably incorporate well into a buttoned instrument emulating a much more complicated species of itself. Probably it would be fun as a result. Part of that is being capable of reaching some achievement. Emulating a punk/pop?!? band.
If Green day weren’t somewhat mediocre in some of their instrumentation it would be nearly impossible to incorporate it into a playable game.
I don’t think Frank Zappa guitar hero is coming out soon, and there’s a reason for that.
Please have some consideration of these concepts before inconsiderately spraying your vitriol over what might be a quite satisfying game experience.
Being mean and cynical isn’t enough…you’ve really got to have a valid point. I think you’re missing the point here, although I appreciate your intent.
I agree with this guy, Green Day sucks. The thing is, my 12 year old Daughter, and 11 year old Son would probably disagree with me, so you really can’t blame EA for trying to cash in, they are running a business after all. My kids could not understand why anyone would want to buy the Beatles Rock Band (I’m sure they will understand when they reach college age).

Where to start. First let’s qualify me as something other than a disgruntled Green Day fan:
1: While I’ve seen Green Day live lots of times and bought not only Dookie “back in the day” but Kerplunk and 1039/Smoothed Out Happy Hours followed by everything else (including the weird b-sides album), I can say the same for Counting Crows, The Whitlams, Ben Folds, Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, Gogol Bordello, Ozomatli and others. Currently Frank Turner is on in the office.
2: Some Green Day stuff is shockingly bad. See, I don’t like all of it.
Now I feel I can go for it:
Comparisons are a tough thing to do with Green Day. Early work has echoes of Stiff Little Fingers, while later stuff borrows from Meatloaf and even Genesis. Their covers (such as the chaotic “My Generation” are often cheeky, humorous and better than most. The fact that they tour as a five-piece lends credence to the fact that their music is more complex than that of the traditional garage three-piece. King For A Day is simply the best punk song with horns since the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.
The only way you could have ignored this is to have ignored most of the album tracks that differentiate GD from the other power-pop-punk bands.
Billie Jo wears make-up, it’s true. Y’know how you write controversial titles to get the reader to read and then comment? Same thing. At what age would you have liked him to stop?
Mass sales don’t of course indicate talent. Listen to Davide Sanna, David Ford, Easyworld, Iwasacubscout or any other skint jobbing or even defunct band out there with a group of loyal fans who just don’t understand whay the world won’t hear what they hear. In Green Day’s case however, like The Divine Comedy, Beautiful South, Elton John, The Beatles and U2, they have moved with their market and done it with skill.
Still, none of this is likely to make you change your mind and I don’t expect you to agree with me. You don’t like Green Day, the same way people didn’t like Hootie & the Blowfish, just because Cracked Rear View went platinum so quickly. I’ll be content that I write more convincingly than you though. Yeah, that feels better.
It’s funny to read the replies defending Green Day as some great, great band. I don’t dislike Green Day by any means, they have a few good diddies, but IMO they’re not in the “great band” category. Record sales do not equal greatness as a band/artist, and if you indeed believe that, then industry has you by the short and curlies and there’s no helping you. So go watch some more American Idol and don’t worry about what this nerd (Gavin M.) that writes for a gaming website has to say. Listen to “American Idiot” and keep believing that it’s some kind of profound political statement,….and be happy. Because, really, that’s what it’s all about.
Yeah, I’m sorry, but Green Day blows. Punk rock has long since died and in its place is this watered down pop music that bands like Green Day like to force on the massess. I really feel sorry for kids growing up today having to listen to this schlock.
I can’t say I’ve ever really liked Green Day beyond Dookie. And I haven’t voluntarily listened to the radio in however many years now, but those rare times I’ve heard stuff from American Idiot it’s sounded like generic stuff churned out for profits, so I highly doubt I’d even bother playing this on a friends system.
However, “talent” is not really a qualifier for “what’s good”. While I think someone/some band might be talented at playing some sweet riffs, like Steve Vai or Dragon Force, it doesn’t instantly make me want to listen to them. Sometimes it’s nice to listen to some mindless pop. All a matter of right time/right place to really like certain music.
Honestly, the only music game that I would think twice about buying is one that contains exclusively progressive music. Play through all the oldschool stuff (King Crimson, ELP, Classic Yes, Rush, old Genesis, etc.), and then hit the new wave of progressive music (Oceansize, Porcupine Tree, The Mars Volta, Tool, Battles, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, etc. etc.)
I can only imagine playing a Rock Band game where *every song* is something I actually WANT to play!
By the way, Green Day is total shit. And to the guy who asked if liking them makes someone musically idiotic, I’m pretty sure the answer is clearly yes. Show me someone that knows anything about the actual structure of music, and I’ll show you someone who knows that Green Day’s sorry excuse for music is terrible.
Very poor article, from the opening two sentences (‘Give the people what they want. Oh, no, they want something that I don’t like!’) to the overall argument (‘I don’t like this thing, therefore everyone must not like it’).
Really, are you proud of this contribution? You haven’t actually said anything or offered an insight, just expressed a dislike. Well, I don’t like celery, but I don’t run up to people in supermarkets and slap it out of their hands.
Game publisher chooses popular band who have sold a lot of CDs to make money from. Seems smarter than them choosing an unpopular band just because ‘Gavin M.’ prefers them. You understand that MTV/Harmonix intend to make money, not extract a good review from you, right?
This seems to be more about your distaste to Green Day’s music which is fair enough but to someone who actually likes the music, will this game be right for them?
It’s a popular band there’s no denying that so why would Harmonix NOT make this game?
Uggg, is this a sign that Rock Band is going to start putting out frivolous crap like Guitar Hero Does? There is no way in hell I’d shell out $60 for Green Day. I did for The Beatles because they’re THE BEATLES. This should have been a track pack on the Music Store, not an entire game into itself. There’s really only one more feature I want out of Rock Band and that’s to add harmonies for singing into the main game itself but still be backwards compatible with the 200+ songs I’ve already bought off the Music Store.
So you call yourself a pro on music huh? No disrespect, but if you don’t know that different people have different tastes in music, you don’t know very much about music at all, do you?
I happen to like Green Day AND B.E.P. in moderation, same with classic rock and newer stuff like Muse. There’s music I don’t like, but I rarely begrudge someone for listening to it. The problem, in my eyes, is not that Green Day is getting a game (it’s a nice nod to more modern rockers who enjoyed Weezer and such after they did RB: Beetles) but that they’re focusing on individual bands. They need to release games with a variety of eras of rock, so the snob who hates Green day is just as happy as the snob who hates U2.
People support the products (music and video games) they like with the money in their wallets. If a band makes money, or if a game makes money, people like it. Get over it.
Sorry Gavin M, but American Idiot is one of the greatest albums of all time.
Sorry that your intellectual capacity for music is as apparently limited as your editorial writing ability.
2/10 brah. Have one of your smart friends review your submission before posting next time.
Greenday is nice band. Dookie was really a nice album. American Idiot was also a nice album so is their latest album. It’s stupidity to call 20+ million of people who bought their album stupid and people that have no sense of music.
and Rolling stone have rated this album 4/5 so they also don’t have sense of music ?
I think this is the way these games are going to go. They’re going to get diminishing returns because of oversaturation, but in reality they’ve gone out of their way to service niches instead of having broad appeal. I think Metallica, Van Halen, Aerosmith and Green Day are balls, but the day they come out with Guitar Hero: Oasis or Rock Band: British Invasion I’ll run out of my house with my wallet open.
The reality is these games take so little effort to produce, they can release games to the smallest niche and still make their money back and then some. Rock Band seems to have it figured out in that they now have Rock Band Network for allowing anyone to master their own tracks for the game. Adding new graphics or gimmicks to the game is irrelevant, at the end of the day people just want to play their favourite songs.
Music like all art is subjective some people will love a band others will hate it But some of commenter’s make an interesting point About Gavin. I would like to see what is on his iPod and what are is most played songs. I mean when I’m looking for advice on what is good music the first that pops in my head is not what does a guy who writes for a video game website think is good or bad. So will you step up sir and show us that you know what you are talking about when it comes to knowing good music or will you hold back afraid your info will show you have know idea what “good music” is.
I was expecting a legitimate review of the game. All I read was a bitter man complaining about how he hates Green Day. And belittling everyone who disagrees with his opinion. If all the articles on this site are like this, it’s no wonder I have never heard of them.
The Green Day defenders are hilarious. Green Day are a fantastic band with the right songs (Longview, Basket Case, Hitchin’ A Ride) and bloody awful dirge-makers with the wrong ones. American Idiot is a hit-and-miss album with some terrible ballad-esque stinkers (see aforementioned Boulevard Of Broken Dreams and Wake Me Up When September Ends) on it and a couple of good classic Green Day anthems. While Nimrod and Dookie were pretty damn good, Green Day do not have the number of songs good enough to keep you interested for a whole Rock Band game, although (and I’ve seen them) they’re fantastic live.
Sounds pretty reasoanble to me dude, I like it.
Jess

So a crazy thought just came to me……What if people actually enjoy different types of music, and one person’s opinion isn’t necessarily the end-all of facts?
Seriously, I agree with those others who stated that this article could have been well written, but the author does sound a lot like an emo kid who tells others that their band sucks because they are bitter. Just because they have performed well and become successful and you haven’t doesn’t mean you have to take out your pithy anger on them.
Poor poor Gavin, sitting in the corner, all by himself with nothing but a broken Teddy Ruxpin to be his friend. I think the stench he attributes to Green Day is the smell of his own thumb that’s been crammed up his ass most of his life. What a joke, I’m not laughing with him but definitely at him and this lame ass website.
I would like to be, what seemingly is, one of the only to say you’re totally right! I worked in a game store, and they just keep pumping out this crap! I agree everyone has their own taste in both music and games, but popular is so musically unimaginative, or talented.
I think this is the first time I’m actually proud to say I used to like rap as a kid, because I can honestly say I’ve never really liked Green Day. I liked pop music and rap while they were popular… got my sister to overplay it in my presence, and then got sick of it years before I realized I had horrible taste in music myself. (I like metal/rock/alt/industrial now, in case someone was going to make fun of my taste)
And for those who think Green Day are talented, consider these:
1. They got their name because teachers said it would be a green day in hell before they ever make it.
2. My sister learned how to play their stuff on guitar before anything else because they are one of the easiest bands to copy… which means they are not very good (or talented if you wish to split hairs… considering good and bad is so relative.)
I am not one of those “I hate fake instruments games” people. I have beaten GH3 in medium with 5 stars using the controller, not the guitar(Including the Slayer song… yeah it hurt) because I have arthritis in my hands, so I can’t reach the buttons properly.
And for those who want Coldplay to have their own Rockband title, please think of how fun that would actually be… common… I love Coldplay, and I don’t want to press buttons to it… For one it would become overplayed like all the other songs, and for two it’s not fast enough to actually make it fun… other than RPG’s and JRPG’s it’s silly to hit buttons in a videogame every 20 minutes… that defeats the point of it being interactive.
You cant just say a band “sucks”. You have to clarify a reason. Whether it be all the songs sound the same now, to just bad songs via they’ve ran their course. 50c may have sold a lot, but i doubt it is as much as green day. green day has been around for a long time, and still are getting attention. personally, ive drifted from them and their music. Bottom line for me is as long as you create/play music because you love it. You have to be original, and creative if your going to tour and be a band.
Oh hey, let’s bash the one line in the music game genre that posted the highest profit rating, let alone near the top of the entire video game industry altogether. Now, I know Harmonix started Guitar Hero too, and they only pushed out 1 and 2 and that 80′s add-on for 2, but when they made it into a band that included more people than just some head-to-head action, they had a winning ticket. Now that Activision took over Guitar Hero, it’s been spewing out crap anyway they can get someone to look sideways at it. There’s a difference between knowing how people want their steak cooked and deep frying spam and dishing it out as filet minoin and the boys (and girls, really hot hot girls!) at Harmonix know how to make it just right. But wait, let me guess, you’re the same idiot who said that Beattles Rock Band would tank and that no one would notice it was out…
All respect for this article was lost when I saw Rock Band: Coldplay
WTF is this? I came here to get an idea of what songs are in this and what songs got left out. Instead, I get some self-absorbed 20 something’s manifesto on Western culture and music??!? This writer is a complete hack…and even more, a complete and utter idiot. I LOVE Dookie, one of my favorite albums. American Idiot was not bad, but certainly ain’t no Dookie. That being said, any moron that tries to argue that Dookie is superior musically or artistically to American Idiot (which this author does with gusto) proves that they are completely ignorant of music. Like it or hate it, American Idiot is FAR more musically intricate, sophisticated, diverse and…this is like trying to explain to a teenager that ‘music’ actually means something.
Complete and utter fail, Gavin M. Unpack that bag that you were tossing your desk contents into after you sent this off and started whistling merrily, day-dreaming about that gig in the Big City that was just around the corner. This is the silliest, failiest, most embarrassing thing I have read in quite awhile.
I understand that this gentleman is writing this article off of opinion, not fact, but i would like to make the argument that even if what he said about “people like us” buying “crap music”- those band who make millions off of us have to be at least decent musicians. If they sucked- no one would even consider listening to them… Now, i don’t LIKE green day, but i am not going to sit around and talk sh*t about them- i mean, i can’t play an instrument half as well as they can. And i’d like to know whether or not the author of this article is in the same boat as me.
I can make the statement that this author is right about one thing- music games that focus around one band don’t sell well. Even The biggest probably with ANY one band being the main focus of a game like this is that it just becomes repetitive. there is no change in genre- you get to play the same types of tabs and riffs as the last song you played.
So, i guess what my main point here is- Even rock Band U2 would suck, regardless of how many people listen to them (i’d be willing to bet most of their fans don’t even know what an x button is, anyways….), on the pure fact that the genre on single band music games is just a retarded idea in the first place. And To whoever wrote this article- putting your spelling and grammatical errors aside- this article still sucked. You based it off of your opinion of music rather than the integrity of the game itself- and on top of that, you barely talked about why the games suck other than that you think green day sucks. Way to go.
This is just a poorly written whiney article from someone who doesn’t like green day, and figured he could get some page views out of it.
I honestly can’t think of a better band to move forward with other than Led Zeppelin or maybe U2.
Think about it, Green Day has been around since 1987 and are still going strong. They appeal perfectly to that sweet spot demographic of gamers (males 16-30). There were a lot of teen age males listening to their breakthrough hit Dookie back in 1994, today they are now 30ish. Through the years they had many hit records and currently many teens are listening to 21st Century Breakdown. The Beatles are a power house, but I’d go as far to say Green Day has a reasonable shot at getting near Beatles Rockband numbers because of demographics of gamers.
I am content to realize the author will someday grow out of the phase where his completely arbitrary tastes in music will seem like facts to him.
I completely agree with the author’s comments. I feel music pop has been in decline since the 70′s, and it keeps getting worse. If I hear another auto-tuned pile of garbage, I’ll probably blow my own head off. Greenday has always been a shitty band, so of coarse the masses are going to eat it up.
Iron Maiden has a 12 pack of songs that were released, not 3.
And you are who exactly? A wannabe journalist who thinks he’s entitled to define what constitutes good and bad musical taste? Or a douche. You decide.
Yeah, as much as I love Rock Band 2 and Harmonix, this is going to flop inevitably. I honestly don’t know why they green-light crap like this after seeing Activision run GH into the ground just a year earlier. Talk about diluting your franchise.
Also, yes, Green Day is nothing special now. American Idiot was the album of the year while I was in high school, it was just a whiny, self-depreciating album that complained about things and was mostly just depressing.
In addition, I advocate that you all spread out your musical libraries. If the music you listen to can be found in the music section at your local Wal-mart, it’s not real enough… probably. Though, classics are okay, we’re talking about more recent stuff.
the person say that jet about green day and billie joe SUCKS,GREEN DAY is the best punk rock band y all the FUCKING WORLD,im a fan of GREEN DAY and they are not wasting the time they are the better thing in all this stupid and miserable world with a lot of politics and people who dont understand what minds the word FREEDOM.THEY choose by of that form and i know that is the beter thing!!!!!!!!!!!
Who gave this idiot a website to post on.
Very very well said
Best article I’ve seen all week! Some amazingly funny replies too!
Hahahahahahahaahaha!
Wow… what a pretentious twat. The kind of douche who only listens to bands because nobody’s ever heard of them. Clue: sometimes bands are popular because they’re good at what they do.
Ain’t it the truth. Folks, the general public, by definition, are not experts in music. If the general public WERE experts in music, then they wouldn’t be the general public anymore.
The general public, poorly educated in music (and poorly educated in general), are the ones who buy albums by bands such as Green Day. Does that mean these people are wrong for liking them? No, taste is relative.
You can say, with objectivity, that Green Day is a bad band, though. All you have to do is listen to the music being produced in the 50s, 60s, and 70s to quickly understand that.
Correct, bands are popular because they’re good at what they do. And what they do is create music with extremely simplistic lyrics and composition which appeals to the masses who, by definition, are uneducted in music and in general.
How old is the article writer? Sounds like 20 or so. When he’s older he’ll regret this misguided article.
I would LOVE to see whats on Gavins playlist..
Probably some absolutely horrible “indie/underground” cock-shit like deathcab for cutie or dashboard confessional or some crap.
Either that or he’s one of those douchenozzles stuck in the 70′s “classic” rock phase.
Yeah, it’s obvious they aren’t punk. Punk died in the 80′s. Get over it. Blink 182, Alkaline Trio, whoever are self aware that they don’t dish out punk anymore. They cater to the suburban mall rat crowd not the punks digging through garbage for food and living off the streets.
Green Day is successful because Billie Joe is damned good at writing catchy hooks. Some would call that songwriting talent.
Even Pitchfork gave good reviews for some of Green Day’s albums.
green day is the best, i’m a chilean fan of green day,and do not share any of your article, but it’s your opinion
No te conozco pero ya puedo deducir que eres un mediocre. Tanto odias a Green Day y haces juegos a base de ellos. Me hiciste reír demasiado
Green Day is the best? Far from the better punk bands.
I still don’t understand why they just can’t do a Guitar Hero or Rock Band game based on metal (like Guitar Hero: Metallica, but not just Metallica). Seriously, those songs are made for music games, and they’re the most fun to play
As for Green Day: Rock Band, I think Green Day is a good band, but of all the bands to choose to base a music game around, they’re not at the top of my list. Personally, they should’ve chosen a band that’s either ridiculously famous (like The Beatles) or has challenging songs that are fun to play (like Metallica)
Or actually, here’s an even better idea. Why doesn’t EA stop trying to compete with Guitar Hero and just continuously update Rock Band 2 with gameplay enhancements and DLC? It was received better by critics than Guitar Hero anyway, so why not be the bigger mega-publisher and stick with it?
Once again may I say, ‘GO Jason it’s your birthday’
After all the bitching and whining about Gavins thoughts on Greenday (which I to do not agree with), no one had the balls to just say that band name games are a waste of time. It’s a quick cash in against fans. EA and Activision have driven their own market away through over released nonsense. Don’t they remember what happened to Dance Dance Revolution in this country?
@ Yousif,
Don’t you dare say a thing about Dance Dance Rev. I put on my bear suit and dance away into the wild, now I can’t do that anymore, since they decided not do another one in a long time.
@Miguel, RE: “The Internet Fallacy is in full effect here.
“I don’t like something, therefore it is obviously not good, and anyone who does has no taste.””
Green Day is not a terrible band because a certain person does not like it, they are a terrible band because, as was said in the article, they have not written anything creative since 1994.
And screw opinion, opinion does not make this band any more talented, talent is a near equatable thing – it just means you like them.
GREEN DAY ES UNA BANDA mUY TALENTOSAA Y YO CREO
QUE CADA BANDA BUENA COMO METALLICA Y LOS BEATLES
HAN SACADO SU PROPIO VIDEOGAME
AHORA ES EL TURNO DE ELLOS
GREEN DAY ES UNA BANDA SUPER CHIDA LA MEJOR QUE HAY
Y NO VEO COMO ESQUE UNA PERSONA(SI SE LE PUEDE LLAMAR ASI)ODIARA A GREEN DAY DE UNA FORMA TAN SADICA SOLO CONTESTAME UNA PREGUNTA
TIENES LA CAPACIDAD DE TALENTO QUE ELLOS TIENEN COMO PARA CRITICAR A UNA BANDA TAN BUENA COMO ELLOS?
ERES uNA FRAUDE WEE
@ gREN DAY
Asi, ¿tienes la capacidad y el talento que Green Day tiene, y por eso, les puedes juzgar y puedes decir que Green Day es una banda muy bueno? Yo no realizo
who is believed to say that GREENDAY be long gone to see if they sing well and besides were not so cool if they were not in the best grammy awards like MTV and so can not say it eeh! are very much mistaken
Green Day is currently one of the Best Bands I’ve Ever Seen, There’s nothing wrong with wearing Eyeliner (At least you won’t look good in it, but Green Day do!), They never say anything bad to some other musicians… In Fact they know on how to appreciate others, and some people judge them easily and never take time to listen to their songs and try to understand the lyrics… Punk neved died in Music Industry… That’s why Green Day is creating a new description to the genre.. they are not one of those trying-hard to be punk/rock bands.
GREEN DAY is A GREAT BAND because: Of their Chart topping hits, albums from gold to platinum, sold out arena shows, GRAMMY, MTV and other music awards, They give out their best in every show… Environmental Friendly (Green Day + NRDC)
I respect everyone’s opinion, whatever it is because it’s what they think of them.. i can’t do anything about it.. but a band like Green Day!? THEY REALLY DESERVE SOME GOOD REVIEWS Like this…
So what I have concluded from this article is: You don’t like Green Day (or the Black Eyed Peas). You like Coldplay. You think everyone should share your opinion. That’s all I’ve got. Congratulations, you officially fail at life.
green day is bitter than others bands. fuck you
The comments to this article make me hate life. On the one hand some of the people leaving comments hate on the authors opinion of Green Day as being closed minded, etc, yet they then bash the authors taste in music. This is quite perplexing. You either are for open mindedness or not, which one is it?
In the end, this is an editorial piece, you choose to read it and it is not meant to be the law. Unfortunately, many do not understand this, and it will probably be those who purchase this game and are the ones calling Green Day innovative, etc
Just my 2 cents, I appreciate everybody’s taste in music, and have my own, no matter how I feel about certain bands I would never expect someone to change their opinion based on what I say.
you’re a stupid, green day is the best band!
Foop – I agree with you. People often comment like the only opinion that could *possibly* be right, is their own. It’s surprising to see how many people get so worked up over an article. That being said, I don’t like where Green Day has headed. I don’t view them as a punk band so much anymore, as much as a pop/political band. But I did enjoy their early works before Dookie. As far as punk bands go, I think the Buzzcocks, Cock Sparrer, and even the Vandals have more talent in that genre. It’s cool if other people like them, definitely not my personal taste though.
whoever fucking wrote this $#** ass article can go suck a d*** because let me tell you, Green Day is BY FAR one of the best bands i’ve ever seen in my lifetime. They’ve inspired so many people around this world it’s too overwhelming to even count. Green Day has been through more shit than any other band has been through to get where they stand today so if your going to talk shit about Green Day then you better have the smarts to back it up because just for making this article, your going to have people knocking on your door to beat the shit out of you kid. Green Day pretty much saved my life. When i was going through hard times, i would pop in a Green Day CD and that was my therapy. go ahead, i can’t wait until Billie Joe runs across this pathetic webpage and reads all this stupid moron shit that you took your stupid little ass time on. don’t worry you will get your day bitch!
YOU ARE A GENIUS READ MY COMMENT
KEEP ON ROCKING GREEN DAY BEST BAND EVERR!!!!!!!
The question is if the lead signer was down with his pants what would you do?
@ britany
need more therapy
Wow, someone needs Valium, stat!
@ Brittany
And others commenting to her. Take it easy guys, she’s a hormonal teen, cussing is big within that age claim.
Brittany ‘Green Day has been through more shit than any other band has been through to get where they stand today’
Nirvana and Kurt Cobain would like a word.
i dun like it..
Ines- what a silly comment. You are saying people should be able to like what they like, but also saying that people aren’t allowed to have an opinion when they DON’T like it. Are people not allowed to express dislike for something? Opinions go two ways, you know. I hate to think this is how you react when someone tells you they don’t like something.
I would delete your comment Ines, but i rather have people see you as pathetic as you are making that comment.
call me pathetic, I don’t care… he can’t dislike what he wants .. but just because he don’t like green day it’s to have bad taste in music to listen to them?
to say “green day sucks … ” is not the same as “everyone who listens green day is stupid and have no taste for music”
(sorry for the words I used… everyday I have to listen comments like that and I though it wasn’t fair to treat like that people who have different opinions..)
I also would like to delete that comment, sincerely. I’m sorry
sorry I meant: he CAN dislike what he wants
im amaizing by the level of ignorance in the people mind, green day its one of the best band in the world if you dont belive me ask more than 17.000.000 people who think the same, green day have been progresating since dookie makin every time better albums and overcom themself
YOU STUPID PEOPLE ISNT GREEN DAY GUILT IF YOU LISTEN HORRIBLE MUSIC AHAHHAHAHA POOR STUPIDS
I’m amazed by the amount of people who comment on this site that can’t spell!
To be honest, I’m surprised that Harmonix went the single band route in the first place. You’d figure they might devote a game to a single genre instead, simply on the basis that it’s different.
I’d rather see a game called Punk Band where you play songs by the Sex Pistols, the Cro-Mags, or Underdog. Or maybe a Metal Band where you play everything from Black Sabbath to the Black Dahlia murder.
green day for me is one of my favorite bands like nirvana
its good cansiones most say nothing good or productive but
cansiones good for me is not the point of view of other people who are dazed noise but they ought not criticize people aa ay that if you like what green day is think about that before we criticize all music groups .
q ayan may be stuck in a disk, but took over and sold … I will not tell which is the best band in the world but it is good
111 VIVA GREEN DAY!!!
oooh… metal lover feels frustrated!! ooh… his progresive metal band is never going to be in a game… so, let’s say ugly things of the popular bands that i don’t like… oooh… look at me… so troll.
XD
just a game, baby. get over it.
people who likes greenday are gonna be super happy. the others… just say : “meh.. whatever”…
La seguridad en Barcelona es la preocupación cada vez más creciente, es por ello que Serenos Metropolitanos pone a su disposicion a un gran equipo de expertos para la seguridad de los suyos.
