When football is at its best there’s nothing better. Granted the thought of a goal-less draw between Bolton and Villa doesn’t set the heart racing, but watching Barcelona dominate their rivals is a joy to behold. It’s this excitement that keeps us coming back for more. If we hadn’t of just watched the end of the Premiership go down to the last 5 minutes of extra time we would have called that scenario over the top drama. But we did see it, and it was still hard to believe. With Euro 2012 on the horizon football fans will be wet with anticipation in the hope that we will be entertained by the thrills and spills of the international competition that saw Gazza’s greatest goal and that infamous dentist chair celebration. As ever EA Sports are jumping on the opportunity to release a FIFA tie in. However this year it has been released as downloadable content, as opposed to the full game releases we have often be forced to buy for the full £40 price tag. We picked it up for £15.99 (or 1,800 MS points) to see what challenges lay ahead of Mr Hodgson. The main attraction is of course the official UEFA Euro 2012 tournament. Any of the qualified sides can be chosen, and from there the competition begins. Picking England the three group stages began against France. The gameplay is the great FIFA experience we are used to. There are no additions to the control system, with the most notable features being cosmetic; official logos bookend the match, with newly recorded commentary setting the scene nicely. The experience of an international tournament is created very well as your team’s chances and star players are assessed both before and after kick-off. However it’s clearly been a while ago since the commentary was recorded. Amongst the analogies and statistical comments was the praise for Terry as captain of England and Chelsea, just short of being called a saint. Clearly was written before the allegations of racial abuse. Whether Terry will even appear in Hodgson’s squad is yet to be seen. However EA Sports will update the team-sheets for every nation as they are announced. Progressing through the tournament is nothing new. If anything it is a very simple experience, with no demands on you to make choices in between games. Simple continue through a rather colourful menu as you are presented with facts about goal scorers and the latest scores until you reach the next match. With the Football Manager – and before that the Championship Manager – experiences there was a sense of glory and personal achievement upon winning a tournament. After winning with England in this DLC however it was an anti-climax. A few fireworks, players jumping and holding the trophy are what we would expect. But it is presented so soullessly that it is just dull. I was hoping they might interview Rooney after his prolific seven goals throughout the Euros, or replay some of the team’s...

Developed by Dim Dim Sum, Role Play is a game where you use the pictures you’ve taken of people, places or animals and give them a makeover with various costumes. Have a particular enemy that you’d like to get revenge on, this is probably the nice way of doing that. To me, it was more like an app to edit your pictures with outlandish makeup. The app itself looks well made, and easy to use. You select the picture you want to add to and edit the picture to where the stencils match the eyes, face, and nose. It’s fairly easy to move the stencils around and use certain points to capture that feature. Once you’re done, you can complete it with a full round of makeup. If you mess up on an eye or the nose is too small or big, it looks like you’ve got eye shadow in your eye. Don’t use a picture where you’re using a real smile, because lipstick will be on your teeth and it’ll look like you became a zombie and chewed on someone. You have a choice of using the Princess or Pirate roles for free or purchase coins from the Coin Shop and buy other roles. You can earn coins with promotional offers like a Facebook game or share your pictures on social outlets to get them. I really don’t like the idea of having to purchase coins and wanted a better way to earn them, maybe a mini game or two. Several Facebook games do this and I just feel that it’s better to have the game make you earn them. Overall, I didn’t find this game very appealing, but I’m pretty sure the younger crowd will have fun with it. They can add makeup and utilize the different costumes to make that friend or enemy look the way you want them to look. Collect or buy your coins to get other roles. 4 out of 10

Platformers have been a staple genre since early gaming, and recent years have seen a lease of life for platform-gaming with Fez, Braid and Portal offering innovative approaches. The original release of Trials HD in 2009 introduced us to physic-based motorcycle platforming, and since then we’ve been hooked. With the latest release of the franchise offering the same addictive gameplay, the Trials series has made its mark on platforming history. Over 60 tracks await you as you progress through levels inspired by the D-Day landings, Inception and Limbo. Stepping out of the dark warehouses of Trials HD is revitalising for the, with greater variety not just in the tracks, but the views offered by developers RedLynx. The creativity in some of the better tracks is admirable, but each time we stopped to take in the gorgeous views or the imaginative design we were punished with a face plant to the floor: reminding us that it may look great, but it is the same unforgiving, fast-paced racing we’ve loved. Licence tests dotted in-between levels serve as episodic tutorials. Although it might be nice to be taught these skills from the start, splitting each lesson up makes learning the ability to bunny hop or jump, that bit more digestible, and breaks up the gameplay nicely. Early courses offer ramps, loop the loops and clever tricks, presenting more of a rollercoaster than a track. For the most part simply holding accelerate and positioning your bike sensibly will get you through the majority of the early outings. But it’s not all easy sailing, with later levels challenging the grey matter as you attempt to solve the traps, puzzles and changes of gravity. The ramp ahead may tempt you to accelerate at full speed, but doing so will cause you doom. You’ll have to reassess what you’ve previously been taught in order to solve these harder challenges and gain the gold medal. But doom is a huge part of Trials Evolution, with the completion of each track resulting in spectacular destruction laid upon your rag-doll driver. On the way to the finish line you will crash again and again, which may be frustrating when aiming for a clean run, but also offers hilarious results as the driver smashes his head, back or groin into various objects. RedLynx is fully aware of the fun this can offer, even rewarding the most spectacular of crashes with achievements. Although surviving the perilous single-player courses is the obvious task, hooking up to Xbox Live (which you’ll need to first download the game) opens up a whole new competitive aspect. Friend’s ghosts and times are displayed on each track. The curiosity to discover just why your friend is five seconds faster than you becomes an obsession as you replay the track over and over, scrutinising how you land, your speed and if its best to back-flip on that jump or not. The multiplayer mode is more clear cut: come first with as few mistakes as possible over a selection of...

Here we come to the final book of the Avatar Trilogy. After the Book of Water and the Book of Earth, we come to the Book of Fire, the stakes are higher, the foes are deadlier, and the awesomeness levels are off the charts. And it all culminates in a series finale for the ages. Let the epicness begin. After the events at Ba Sing Se nearly all hope is lost. Aang’s last chance at facing Fire Lord Ozai before Sozin’s Comet arrives is an Eclipse that will block out the Sun, the source of Firebending. But to seize this chance Aang and his friends need to sneak into the Fire Nation. Will Aang defeat the Fire Lord or will the world burn? Everything will come to an end, one way or another. The Book of Fire has both the darkest aspects and some of the funniest aspects of the entire series and sometimes within close proximity of each other. Episodes like “The Puppetmaster” and “The Southern Raiders” are heavy episodes, but still provide some of the best one liners of the series (I.E. “It’s like my brain has a mind of its own.”). On the character side, Aang is confronted not only with his destiny of facing the Fire Lord, but also his morals are tested by the resulting dilemma of what he is going to do with Ozai. Katara comes face to face with her father and the man who killed her mother. Toph stops hiding behind her cynicism and reveals her true feelings towards her parents. Sokka, tired of being a “guy with just a boomerang,” learns swordplay as well as getting a badass sword that can cut ANYTHING. And Azula, well, learns that intimidation doesn’t always work… yeah. Of course, once again the man with the greatest change is Zuko, I won’t say how he changes (given I’m sure some people are reading this without having seen all or any of Avatar) but anyone who had followed the series knows that this was eventually going to happen, as his character finally comes full circle. If there is one problem I have with the season, it is that they are kind of forced to cram as much as they could in the last few episodes before the finale, leaving very little time for characters to interact, especially since they added two characters to the main group at that point, so there is a lot of interaction that I really wish could have been expanded upon. But enough about that, here are some of my favorite episodes of the Book of Fire (I said some, because this was a LOT harder than the previous two seasons, and I maybe cheating a bit). Favorite Episodes of Book Three: Fire Episode 6: The Avatar and The Fire Lord This episode answers all the questions you might have about the beginning of the war, and about Avatar Roku. In a similar parallel to “The Storm” all the way back in the...

The Legend of the Legendary Heroes Review The Legend of the Legendary Heroes anime is fantasy, adventure, drama, and comedy all mixed into the same series. The series starts with you meeting the two main Characters mid-quest to find one of the legendary relics known to hold and bestow incredible power to whoever wields it. We find out quite quickly that the main male Role Ryner is lazy and really wants nothing to do with their entire mission and would rather take naps all the time. We also learn the main female role Ferris is a steadfast woman devoted to her kingdom, mission, and beating up Ryner along the way. The king of their home kingdom, Roland, Sion Astal was the one to send them on their quest for the legendary relics in hopes to make their kingdom more powerful than the other to put an end to the war between all the major kingdoms. He also believes that by gathering all of the ancient relics, Ryner maybe cure of the cursed power he was born with known as the alpha stigma. His alpha stigma allows him to mimic and learn any kind of magic regardless of which kingdom it’s from. As always though, there are those in the shadows attempting to prevent the king’s plan from succeeding. As in politics there are people on the inside and outside trying to prevent the king’s plan, which they believe will be the kingdom’s downfall. Unfortunately for them, the people elected a Hero king, which means he had fought and won for their country in previous years using his brain and magic. Trying to dethrone him is a lot harder than they could’ve ever imagined. Overall the story is very addicting, you are always wondering what is going to happen next. You never know if someone else has some hidden power or secret that could change the fate of their country. The best part by far is you are not always in suspense, the humor of the show allows you to go through the motions with the characters, and if you get as attached as I was then, you will be crying at the end. Unfortunately, like all anime it has its faults. All the characters have either some kind of disturbingly awesome power or some personality quirk that seems to either ruin their charm or just makes you wonder what the artist was thinking at the time. For example, Ryner has the alpha stigma, capable of destroying the world. Ferris wields a huge sword and is an awesome warrior, but loves to eat dango. The king has spilt personalities, the king’s right hand man has a hand of destruction, and one of the other kings from another country has a power that can destroy whole armies but has to take a part of his body whilst showing off his lovely pink hair. As good as this anime is and as attached as I grew to...

DC Universe Online Has come a long way since moving over to a free to play model. One month after they released the green lantern DLC, they changed to free to play. Since the free to play launch they have released two DLC packs. Lightning Strikes Added quite a bit more with a new zone central city with it’s own set of bounties and missions and a new set of flash themed iconic gear, a duo where you help the Flash become the flash and a new healing role power set lightning. The battle for earth, the biggest DLC to date added a new Tank role power, earth. They added three new duos, two new raids and new missions and new daily quest in south Gotham. I played DCUO from the free to play launch and have seen it progress from a game with little content to a game that offers so much more. It keeps you wanting to come back. The stories are very well written and the fast action combat and the different weapon types really sold the game for me.The power types are very versatile and you can mi and match any weapon type with any power. The introduction of Research and development to the game gave you much more you can do but in all fairness I feel it lacks in what you would call “crafting” since you can really only make mods for gear that add stat bonus. All in all Dc Universe online has evolved into a great MMO. I look forward to want the net DLC “The last laugh” has in store for us, as well as future DLC SAN DIEGO, Calif. – May 8, 2012 - The battle between heroes and villains in DC Universe™ Online (DCUO) continues as Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE) today announced that The Last Laugh, the fourth downloadable content (DLC) pack for DCUO, will be available in June for download on the PC and PlayStation®3 computer entertainment system. The Last Laugh will pit players against each other in high-intensity multiplayer brawls, feature an all-new weapon, and introduce new Light-Powered Legends PvP characters. “We created this DLC purely for the players that like to take the fight to each other in DCUO’s amazing PvP combat,” said Jens Andersen, creative director on DC Universe Online. “Our community has continuously asked for more multiplayer action in DCUO, and we wanted to deliver content that fully meets their expectations and pushes PvP to another level. The Last Laugh is the first DLC that we’ve created that focuses almost entirely on player versus player battles, and it adds an exciting new element as some of DC’s greatest heroes and villains join to fight alongside you. Players will have even more opportunities to prove to the world whether heroes or villains will be triumphant.” The Last Laugh will include an all-new weapon, hours of multiplayer gameplay in the Safe Houses and Headquarters, and new Legends PvP characters: The Shield - Players can unleash this vicious new weapon to bash their opponents, or hurl it to take them...

AnomalyCon Review Kurai AnomalyCon is a second year steam punk convention. For it being only in its second year, I must give them credit for as many people as they are drawing in. This steam punk convention isn’t geared toward a specific age group be is more gear towards a group of people with a common hobby. The people attending this con ranged from early teens to senior citizens, which does seem to make it harder to talk with people unless you can find people you know or are around your age. Jecht I liked the fact that once again I didn’t feel like I had to worry about what my son (5) would be exposed to at this convention. I am not one of those crazy “Focus on the Family” parents that flips out when I go to an anime con and someone walks by in a Yoko cosplay with half her butt hanging out. However I Do like to know there isn’t drunks all day long going around the con and screaming teenagers being obnoxious (teenagers are ok in general). People were polite for the most part, still in crowded place people lack a sense of their surroundings and still run into you. It wasn’t because there were masses at the con, but more so because the areas where people gathered were not very spacious. Kurai The location for AnomalyCon, the Tivoli center in downtown Denver, was not the best option. Yes it has good scenery for the conditions, but the placing of the event rooms was very inconvenient. It felt like you had to walk half the building to get to a panel, granted there were only three panel rooms in a midsize building not suited for anything bigger than a small college fair. You don’t even know where to go when you first walk in there are arrows pointing everywhere and you enter on the second floor when most of the activity is on the third floor. Not to mention weren’t it for the small crappy maps you were given, you wouldn’t have been able to even find the board gaming room or the video room (which location changed on Sunday without notice.) Jecht The Tivoli center is a great location as far as the theme of the convention, but I really believe in the fact that conventions should be at a hotel so that the night life of a convention can continue. Selecting the right hotel would be a challenge of this convention given the setting, but also making sure they don’t repeat the same mistake a lot of other conventions do by selecting a hotel that is not set up for social settings. When going to a con I do expect to do a lot of walking and at this convention in regard to getting from one room to another, while it was spread out, it wasn’t crowded in the walking areas, but in the gathering areas themselves. Kurai The dealer room was cramped...

Call of Cthulhu: Wasted Land is a strategy RPG for the iOS. It is based off the work of HP Lovecraft, author of The Call of Cthulhu. I never played the previous role playing game but I was very optimistic when I began playing the game. The setting is World War I, and a group of soldiers and investigators are working against a massive conspiracy with the German army. The German army wishes to create an army of the undead to ultimately win the war. The idea is simple, easy to follow, and it works. I may have never read The Call of Cthulhu but this is as close as I can get. I dig the story though. Conspiracy and the supernatural make fantastic partners for good storytelling and I can appreciate that. Even though this is an indie game, the story is way more thought out and engaging than most games these days. This is on the iOS so it revolves around the touch screen. While I do not have an iOS product I was able to play the game via the Intell AppUp application. I got to experience this game through my PC rather than an overpriced paperweight. If you have one of those paperweights make sure to purchase this game. The mix of RPG and strategy is very well done. The grid is reminiscent of Fire Emblem or FF Tactics, while the RPG aspect is closer to the paper version of Call of Cthulhu. The most unique aspect of The Wasted Land is the way your characters develop. They do not gain levels. They gain skill upgrades. As a character uses handguns more their handgun skill increases. This allows them to deal more damage and be more accurate. However, this does not change their ability to take punishment. I guess the idea is to show that these people are humans fighting against the undead. There is an Action Point system. This determines the amount of actions a character can take. It takes a small amount of AP to move small distances but the farther the distance the more AP is consumed. Attacking also consumes AP and the more AP you have the more attacks you can do. There are two ways to fire, down the sight and fro the hip. From the hip is less accurate, but uses less AP. Aiming down the sight uses more AP but attacks are more accurate. This game is worth your time if you like a good story and RPGs. The combat is a little touchy and it takes a while to get used to. This is an app after all, you can’t expect to have extreme precision and response like a console or PC based game. I may be a hardcore gamer, but I have a lot of fun with Call of Cthulhu: The Wasted Land. Pick it up on your iOS device now. CoC: The Wasted Land gets a 9/10, the controls are a little sensitive and in some...

Legend of Grimrock is a oldschool 3D grid based dungeon crawler RPG. Now I mean real oldschool like Dungeons Master and Eye of the Beholder. This kind of RPG has been absent from the shelves for quite some time (roughly 10 years). Legend of Grimrock is Almost Human’s debut title and suffice to say, this game did a great job in getting Almost Human’s foot in the door to gaming. The story plays out like this, The player is a prisoner sentenced to death and exiled to Mount Grimrock for crimes he may or may not have committed. Grimrock is filled with dungeons and tunnels and with a team of other prisoners, the escape from Grimrock may prove to be a tougher task than originally thought. While Grimrock is the only story/map available Almost Human intends on updating the game with DLC and user generated content. The Grimrock story arc/map is the only one available at the moment. While you are crawling through the dungeons of Grimrock you will face much more than traps and puzzles. Creatures can be around any corner and it is easy to get outnumbered or flanked. Not only is this a oldschol RPG but it contains many elements of a survival game. Some enemies drop item to consume. There is a hunger bar and it spells doom when the bar depletes. You have four mouths to feed to eat wisely. There are four races to choose from and each have their own advantages and disadvantages. Humans are the basic race. They do not have any particular faults or specialties. They can make good mages, warriors, and rogues. Minotaurs are fantastic brawlers/tanks. Insectoids make good mages but are frail. Lizardmen make the best rogues with increased dex. Your team can consist of any combination, but it is recommended you have one of each race and class to have all your bases covered. When creating yru class you must choose their special skills and allocate skill points to make them proficient in something. Skill points are vital to a mage class while a brawler relies on stats rather than skills. Every race/class has a set amount of stat points to allocate as well. These are used to increase Strength, Dexterity, Vitality and Willpower. Some races get boosts in these attributes while other get decreases. Now to the real reason why you want to get this game, the combat. The group of 4 moves in a 1×1 space, there are two characters in the front and two in the back. Only characters in the front can use melee weapons while characters in the back rely on magic and throwable weapons to attack. There are two hands to equip items for all your prisoners. Mages generally have nothing in their hands as they need it to cast spells. There are staves to use though. Front line fighters are your first attackers and they must use maces and swords to attack. The biggest quarrel with this game is the magic...

Continuing my series of “Why Avatar: The Last Airbender is so awesome that it turns me into a high pitch sonic weapon” I proceed to what would be the second part of the Avatar Trilogy: Book Two: Earth. In case you didn’t know, Avatar (“The Last Airbender” not “James Cameron’s”) is so awesome that it cured cancer in 15 people after watching 3 minutes of “The Blue Spirit” episode (This is not a medical fact, and merely hyperbole. Don’t take seriously), and I am here to expand on that awesomeness. After routing the Fire Nation from the North Pole and securing a Waterbending teacher, Aang and his friends return to the Earth Kingdom to find him a Earthbending teacher. But time is running out, Summer is fast approaching and with it the return of Sozin’s Comet, a Comet that gives Firebenders immense power. If Aang does not master the elements and defeat the Fire Lord before Sozin’s Comet arrives, then there will not be a world to save. New friends join while new enemies appear, but now the lines between friend and foe are harder to distinguish. While it took the Book of Water a while to hit its stride, The Book of Earth starts things off strong and just keeps on going until a season finale that just makes me glad I have the entire series on DVD. Introducing us to a series of new villains that makes Admiral Zhao seem like small potatoes by comparison, namely Azula. It says a lot about your character if even her best friends are afraid of her. Manipulative, cold, calculating, and one of the strongest firebenders in the world, Azula is all kinds of bad. However, we do get introduced to one of the BEST characters in the series, Aang’s new Earthbending teacher, Toph. Not only is she the self-proclaimed greatest Earthbender who ever lived (and has the skills to back up that claim), she is also rude, crude, and sarcastic. She is also blind, “seeing” the world around her through the vibrations in the earth. This makes for great lines where the rest of the cast nearly forget that she is blind. As for our returning characters, Aang at the end of the season finally confronts many of his personal issues. Katara with her new-found waterbending proficiency is tougher, more confident, and is one of the most powerful waterbender in the world. Sokka is still more or less comic relief and is only occasionally effective in battle, but his tactical mind remains key to the group’s success, not only in coming up with the strategy to take down the Fire Nation Drill, but also formulating the plan that becomes the focal point for the rest of the Book of Earth and half of the Book of Fire. But the person with the greatest level of development is once again Zuko. Now on the run from the Fire Nation, Zuko and Uncle Iroh spend most of the series try to lay low....

The long awaited announcement for the sequel Call of Duty Black Ops II was revealed to the gaming community on Tuesday May1st. Treyarch studios, continues the story of the first game and introduces you to David Mason who is the son of Alex Mason the feature character in Black Ops. The game is set to be available November 13th this year and will be launched on Xbox, PS3 and PC. The game play will be split between three combat theaters, of course there is the much anticipated futuristic story line and need I state the obvious there will be online arena, but there is no doubt that the multitude of us are waiting to see what the Zombie mode of the franchise will introduce us to. Treyarch/Activision are of course keeping their cards close to the vest as to what aspects of the game will be “tweaked “ but have said that philosophically they will be starting from the ground up. Game design director David Vonerhaar said “Instead of just extending multiplayer from Black Ops, we’re done making games where one style fits everyone and that the multiplayer won’t be a one game mode anymore.” Activision has finally heard the outcry of the masses, and wants the gaming experience to be enjoyable to not only the serious gamer but also the casual gamer weather you prestige once or fifty times. This no doubt will lead to a myriad of rumors and speculation that will be the fodder of game chats worldwide, but rest assured that we will all learn more about the upcoming war at the E3 convention this June.
