Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 has been one of the most anticipated first person shooters this generation, yes even passing Halo 3 with the hype. So with that in mind, who didn’t know the game was going to set sales records? No surprise there, we all expected the game would most likely set some kind of a new record in entertainment sales. Not only was Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 one of the highest selling games this year by selling 4.7 million copies opening day bringing in some $320 plus million dollars but it also blew away Hollywood films to become the highest-grossing entertainment launch ever.
Combined U.S and U.K. sales brought in $335 million dollars and counting. The video game surpassed the opening weekend of The Dark Knight, which only grossed in $171 million dollars back in July of 2008.
A game doesn’t sell this much by it self of course, everything from millions of dollars being spent on advertising during Monday and Sunday night football games to nearly perfect reviews from such big outlets as Game Informer, IGN and GameSpot, as well as some not so high score such as here at Koku Gamer. These reasons along with the past Call of Duty titles have made this franchise a yearly buy for a gamer.
While the game did great it’s opening day, only time will tell how many copies Modern Warfare 2 will sell. Can it beat its predecessor? Or will it be the new video game sensation? Comment below and let us know. No registration is required to comment.
Note: This wasn’t to compare who’s better, nor to prove that gaming industry makes more. It’s simply some interesting figures. Please keep your comment clean.
